After applying to the nursing program, I was placed on the wait list. A few days later, I received an acceptance letter from Assistant Dean of the School of Nursing. My family and I were ecstatic. I'm a model student with an exceptional GPA & a volunteer at the local hospital, so we all felt the acceptance was well-earned. The extended family was notified and it was one of the happiest moments of my life. The following day, I received this email:
"I must aoplogize for any miscommunication that has went out regarding an update in the background check. The email sent out was sent to everyone in reference to code changes, unfortunately the email stated you had been "preliminary accepted" into the program. To avoid further confusion, you are still on the wait list. Again I apologize for any miscommunication on our behalf."
An email from one of the office assistants, the "miscommunication" apparently wasn't deserving of a letter from the assistant dean. I was devastated. I tried repeatedly to get an appointment with the assistant dean to discuss with her what happened. She finally agreed to meet with me, but then cancelled later that day; in essence telling me that she does not meet with wait listed students. There are far "too many" students applying to FAU and that's her policy.
I'm been a devoted student at FAU since 2010 (also working full-time to help put myself through school). 3.8 GPA. And I tutor Biology, assisting students with passing difficult science courses. The staff's treatment of students is truly heartbreaking. & for a nursing school that prides itself on "kindness" and compassion. I've received nothing but callousness and indifference. You are just a # at FAU and as long as they have your money, that's all that matters.

As for the social aspect, you can make friends if you become involved. You can join a sorority to be involved, or you can do as I did and make friends in your classes. There are parties here often (Almost every night), so if that is what you want then you can easily access that. However, if that is not for you then you can easily avoid them as well. FAU has single dorms available for freshman and believe me that was a blessing. I would highly suggest a single. I feel safe walking back to my door at 1:00 in the morning from the library. Overall FAU has impressed me.
