i attended UVA for a total of 6 years.BrightPreMed and Medical
i attended UVA for a total of 6 years....the first 4 were incredibly difficult for me as a person. i survived but it was bitter. Admittedly i was woefully unprepared for the social and academic competition. My major study was worthwhile however. After a couple years of working various average jobs, I got readmitted to do premed work and rotc. finally i got admitted to a decent medical school, which was difficult also , but I never again experienced the social isolation that i knew at UVA the first 4 years.UVa might look something like a southern university, but it is one of the most cutthroat and elitist universities anywhere. you will find very little of southern culture with its friendliness and humor among these intensely striving people. really talented people can be outcast there, its astonishing. the whole school truly revolves around a cadre of wealthy , well-connected kids who are inducted into secret societies ....hence the elitism. this inner university steals the essential experience of college from everybody else....its no wonder that the percentage of alumni participating after graduation is quite low. By that point, you have figured out, you are not part of the chosen.

I transferred here for UVa's name.BrightPreMed and Medical
I transferred here for UVa's name. As a pre-med student, you want to get straight A's, and it helps to get straight A's from a big name university.

However, I now quite clearly see my transfer was a mistake. At my old university (another VA school, not a community college), I was treated as an individual and professors were always available. Here, professors have told me straight that their research is more important than their students. Go to this school if you are willing to work on your own to get involved in the research community. In that sense, UVa is a great school. As a pre-med, though, I'm in my 3rd year, and I still have classes with over 400 kids. It is ridiculous. Not only did my old school not have TAs, but, now, even in TA office hours there are over 15-20 students. There is no individual attention.

The University of Virginia is an institution thatNot so brightNursing
The University of Virginia is an institution that is geared toward shaping very competitive young professionals. However it is up to you as a student to take advantage of the VARIOUS resources and connections that this university offers.

In the classroom: Class sizes are generally pretty large, people are competitive but will work with you as long as you you have a work ethic, pretty difficult to stand out to the professor until upper level smaller class sizes.

Social life: The never ending social events, clubs, activities, parties and endless distractions on the corner make it difficult focus on school work and other aspects of life. If you are self discipline, know how to prioritize and manage your time you will do great. If you don't, your grades will suffer big time. It is so easy to get wrapped up in the UVA mentality in that you must be out and doing UVA stuff ALL the time but believe it or not, there is life beyond the Charlottesville bubble. So be aware that there is a UVA bubble and make sure you are not trapped in it all the time.Just be smart and take advantage of your time here. You can't help but fall in love with UVA.
