Thankfully he is retired.  He was horribly unprofessional and dishonest.  You had to make sure that you compared your test grade to the other students.  You could have the same answer.  One gets an A.  The other a C.  Easily done when all tests were essay

Stroke his ego

It was 1973.  I had a lot of issues, was not into studying, and didn't do a major assignment.  I told Bill Harvey that I didn't do it, “because it wasn't worth doing.” [It was identical to the research assignment assigned the previous semester.] He ended up telling me that I “wasn't college material,” and I failed the course despite having a solid B average in all the other work.  I ended up dropping out of college.

I readily admit that I wasn't very mature.  However, I think he was, perhaps even less so.

When I graduated with cum laude (despite feeling the whole time that I was stupid, and perhaps not college material) from the University of Massachusetts in 1979, I considered sending him a copy of my diploma.  It wasn't worth the postage.

I am so sorry that I did not know back then how to address what happened, and thought it was all my fault.  I am even more sorry that he continued teaching.  However, it feels a bit vindicating, these 45 years later to realize that I was not the only person he abused.
