Overall: A
Peter Railton is a strange person who generally has contempt for students.  When teaching, he uses good analogies to illustrate his subject matter, his lectures are generally coherent, but he is against students participating in class.  His subject matter is difficult to understand and he makes it known that asking questions garners his disapproval.  He engages in the same kinds of behavior outside class.  He speaks with students who initiate conversation, but one can sense his reluctance and he is generally condescending.  Students describe his behavior as “odd” and “disconcerting.” He is self-absorbed and carries himself with a uniform noble quality coupled with sardonic disdain.  Students also feel that visiting him during his office hours bothers him and those who do find their grades are not commensurate with their skill level and effort.

Should do to do well...
I don't think you'll find an instructor who cares less about work or his obligation to students.  He doesn't return anything on time but is a complete hardass about deadlines.  There are so many high quality instructors at michigan, but this guy isn't one of them.  Do yourself a favor and take someone else!

He's a bit dry and boring, but it's a pretty easy class.
Should do to do well...
Don't skip class and go to office hours at least once.
Should know...
Go to class, do your work and smile.

This is a HORRIBLE class.  I thought that I loved philosophy...then I had Railton.  He is impossible to learn from and speaks in monotone.  I fall asleep everytime I go to class, and I am in the Honors College!!!  Never take a class taught by him.
