Overall: C
Professor is well versed in this field, but is not a good educator.  He is not good at explaining the material and is not tolerant of those who have great trouble with it.
Should do to do well...
Should not expect a consistent attitude.  This professor plays favorites, and is more focused on his composition career outside of school.
Should know...
Attendance is not highly regarded.  The work must be accomplished if not understood or done well.  Attempts must be made by the student, that is all that is required.

Overall: C+
It was “boring” for someone with a keen interest in the subject because I had seen and knew mostly everything before.  But since I enjoy the subject, it wasn't painful, or sleep-inducing.  He's an interesting guy, but there are times where he seems to be “phoning it in”, and then there are times when he's delightful and funny.  The latter occasions are few.
Should do to do well...
Sit there, laugh at his jokes— they're not all terrible.  He's an established figure in music, just not nearly as important as he and the department think he is.  Don't text.  DON'T EAT.  (He's pretty clear about THOSE THINGS.) Do the minimal amount of work required, except for watching the full operas online (as he asks).  You'll watch them in class the next meeting.
Should know...
It's important, I think, to like opera and musical theater.  Note-taking: not that important, but try to keep things he keeps repeating in your head.  You get tests, but Paul's tests are not difficult.  He might throw a trick question in there ONCE the whole semester.  And his paper (compare/contrast 2 works) is the same he gives for every class.  I think if you show some basic comprehension of music, theater, and language, you'll do fine on it.
Student Competency: Unusually High
Student's Grade: A-
