Very good class, and fairly easy, but at times frustrating.  Work load is about right—Most classes are interactive over student drafts and book examples.  Essay exam is over the few lectures which cover book .  .  .  easy.

Should do to do well...
Enjoy the teacher and his humor, but think through answers.  The book is excellent, so read and re-read.  Don't hesitate to go to the his office for help — be ready for honest criticism.  Dr.  St.  John is famous around campus as a writing teacher, but his real love is literature.  Therefore, he has the highest of standards.  Write from your heart, but pay particular attention to word choice, flowing style and unity of theme.  Unless you're “gifted” as a creative writer, it will be difficult to write pieces that are satisfactory to youself.  Dr.  St.  John is great teacher, though, and he won't degrade your efforts too much if you let him know that you're humble and having trouble.

Should know...
Take time to reflect before you write and don't procrastinate on deadlines.  He is serious about due dates.  Use imagination and don't use cliques .  .  .  he hates cuteness.

Good class.  He is intimidating, but underneath a fairly easy and enjoyable teacher.  He seems to actually care about his students individually (surprise, surprise).

Should do to do well...
Don't chew gum.  Don't be a smart mouth unless you want him to serve you so of your own medicine.

Should know...
Read outside material.  (literary criticism, bio info on authors) He is a great teacher with a lot of knowledge, but sometimes the class tends to ramble.  So, to make sure you have enough info (for the essay style tests), do some outside reading.

The class was interesting to me, not boring at all.  How can you be bored with Dr.  St.  John?  I could listen to him all day.  He is SO intelligent!  The work load is very do-able.  The reading averaged around 20 pgs.  per class period.  GREAT CLASS!  WONDERFUL TEACHER!!

Should do to do well...
Make sure you read the assignments.  He likes it when you give insight.  He asks lots of questions.  Don't be afraid to answer.  He seems intimidating at first, but he is a very kind and helpful person and would never embarrass you.  Oh...and if you yawn, cover your mouth!  He will call you on that(personal experience)!  :)

Should know...
His tests are half objective (he calls it objectionable) and half essay.  Pay attention to basic facts in your readings.  Know his lecture points inside out!
