| A
lot of very interesting work...very challenging...was hard but learning curve
was very high. |

forward to the next tie. |

| A
lot of challenging work and in many variations. It
wasn't the old “he talks & we regurgitate later"...it was
stuff that I could use right away. This instructor
is a master of his trade. |
|
|
Student Competency: Expert-Level Student's Grade: F Liked Instructor?: Really Liked |
|
| Overall: A |
| Absolutely
NEVER boring. This may have been a history class
but I have never been so tuned into an instructor
like this one...this was a class where you WANTED to
learn more and couldn't wait until the next time.
I hated it when class ended because it felt like
I was leaning out on a limb waiting for more
exciting lectures and then boom...class was over. THIS COURSE
IS A MUST FOR ALL STUDENTS AT TLU. |

| Overall: A |
| The
class wasn't enough. I wanted more. I would
go talk to Tommy during the day and I was
hanging on every word he said. He is a
truly wonderful professor, and he really knows his stuff.
In fact, he's the best professor I ever had at
TLU...just one of the greatest. And this course should
be mandatory...just too overwhelming to miss. |

was a 500 mile race at warp speed, and exciting
the entire way. |

| Boring????
HAH!! Quite the opposite. There was a
lot of work, but it was things we wanted to
do...everyone was talking about how much they were learning.
There was a lot of “I didn't know that” as
we were doing our research...Tommy was letting us learn via
our own methods and teaching us real research. Did
I learn anything??? Hell YES!! This course not
only taught me about Vietnam, it helped me to see
the many sides of any particular issue. Put simply,
this is a MUST for everyone...and pay attention to the
professor...he knows things that will never be in books...unless he
writes it himself. AWESOME!!!!! |

Student Competency: Beginner Student's Grade: B Liked Instructor?: Really Liked |
|
| Overall: A |
| Never
boring and the excitement never allowed it to be hard,
even though I knew absolutely nothing about Vietnam. There
was a lot of research, writing, speaking, class participation, and
enthusiasm. I realize I was a MIS major, but
this is the best class I ever took anywhere or
anytime. I had him for a couple of business classes
and really enjoyed his style, but you could tell he
was really in his element when teaching history, especially this
course. Awesome-awesome-awesome...that says it all. |

| Best
course I ever took at any college...and the best instructor.
|
|
|
|
| WOW!!
Most awesome course ever. |
|
|
|
| Best
prof I ever had at that school. |
|
|
|
| Nothing
sucked. Tommy was tough and unrelenting, but was very
fair. If you did your work he rewarded you
with the right grade. I saw one cute girl
try to wrangle her way thru the class with flirting
and cutest crap. She didn't do the work and
failed the class. Cute didn't cut it with Tommy.
On the other hand I worked my butt off
and turned in what I thought was quality stuff.
He gave me pointers and had me make some changes
and I was happy with the results. He's the
best professor I've haD at TLU. Sometimes I thought
his tests were too hard, but I realized he was
truly testing concepts and not meaningless drival. |
|
|
|
| Tommy
Phelps is the best college prof I've ever had...anywhere. |
|
|
|
| Super
instructor. Other TLU profs need to pay take some
lessons from him. |
|
|
|
| Great
course and great professor. |
|
|
|
| Excellent.
Absolutely excellent. |
|
|
|
| Nothing
sucked. He was great! |
|
|
|
| I
was intimidated at first. Tommy seemed to be bigger
than life. But he let me practice my speech
with just me and him and he pointed out a
few things and always made confidence building comments. What
a great professor and a super person. |
|
|
|
| tough
course...great instructor |
|
|
|
| there's
the book and theory and there's reality... tommy taught us
both. awesome |
|
|
|
| Best
class and best instructor at TLU. No words to
describe how good he is. |
|
|
|
| Super
instructor. Has a great perspective on the subject by
having real experience. I've had him for other classes
and he is awesome. |
|
|
|
| Tommy
is a great instructor. I felt as if he
was degrading me in my writing. He made my
papers bleed, but always gave me good grades. I
asked him why and he said that compared to others
I was a great writer and if I was learning
something by his suggestions then that's all that mattered.
All along he was just giving me suggestions even though
my work was good. I thought he was hammering
me and he wasn't. |
|
|
|
| Tommy
was a super instructor. But he was even better
as an advisor and counselor. Later on I found
out he was a retired colonel and he never acted
like it...in fact he never even talked about it.
He is so down to earth and simply has a
very keen eye for what each individual needs. There
were times that he kicked me in the ass and
there were times he put his arm around me and
made me feel wonderful...either way, he did it in a
way that proved he cared. Thanks Dr. Phelps...you are
one in a million. |
|
|
|
| Nothing
sucked. Best instructor I've had at TLU. |
|
|
|
| Really
liked the instructor... |
|
|
|
| Just
an awesome course and even more awesome istructor. |
|
|
|
| This
was a great course. I was able to begin
using the info immediately on my job. I even
asked Tommy how I should handle some real life situations
and he was always right on. Great instructor
|
|
|
|
| Excellent
course. It helped me with my communications skills and
was able to start giving presentations at work. Super
instructor. |
|
|
|
| I
love his southern accent but sometimes I had a hard
time understanding him. He made the course challenging with
the wide range of projects, tests, presentation, and lectures.
And he's been there. He's not a theory guy
that teaches straight from the book. And it's really
cool that TLU had a fighter pilot as a professor...way
cool. |
|
|
|
| This
course was awesome. I knew nothing about the Vietnam
war and was stunned, mesmerized, and totally consumed in the
instructor and the material. I still read voraciously on
the subject. I didn't know the professor as well
as the other students, but you can bet he's on
my “to take” list...so powerful in his presentations. What
sucked?? It was when this course ended...awesome, powerful, and
hypnotic. |

| Great
course and great professor. |
|
|
|
| Great
course that could have been B-O-R-I-N-G...but had a
great professor. |
|
|
|
| Tommy
was a great instructor. |
|
|
|
| I
personally didn't like him. He was a great instructor,
but when I had asked for some waivers on my
degree program, he wouldn't do it...this was in his role
as my advisor. I asked him numerous times to
waive certain courses and he repeatedly turned me down.
When I went to the dean, the dean said it
was Tommy's call and he would not do anything unless
Tommy approved it. I felt as if I had
enough of experience that I didn't need to take certain
courses. It would have only been 12 credits and
I didn't see why he wouldn't do it for me.

|
| He
was the best instructor at TLU. He taught history
and business, so he was very versatile. I had
three business courses and one history course with him.
He was an outstanding professor. He knew business and
finance inside and out...but when I took his history class...HOLY
COW!! Only word I can think to describe it
is AWESOME! I was afraid of history and swore
I never would take another one, but since I had
him for some business courses, I decided to try the
history course. A lot of the other students couldn't
talk enough about his Vietnam class, so I took it.
Simply put, I don't think TLU had any instructor
that was as good as him. But where he
was best, was as an advisor and counselor. Tommy
knew everything...he knew every rule, regulation, strategy, financial aid, testing
out...everything. He was influential with other schools to get
us in without too much hassle. He knew where
the easier “other” classes were. he knew each person's
weakness and strengths. He had Sally take algebra at
another school because he knew she was weak in math
or would have me test out for a course because
he knew I had a strong background in the subject
and probably could pass it cold. I knew all
the ins and outs for adult education and was really
respected by all the other schools and the Ed Center
people too. He was also there for anyone who
had a personal problem...he always knew the right thing to
do. I know for a fact, that when one
girl didn't have the money to take a course, that
Tommy paid for it himself and made up a story
about some kind of scholarship...he was a great person with
a big heart. But he was tough too.
I saw several people try to use every device to
skirt the system or get something for nothing, or lie
about everything. Tommy knew everything...and he stood fast and
refused to let anyone get away with anything. But
he also knew when to be fair...I know he helped
me after I had put a lot of effort and
time on one particular class. He got me a
substitution for the class and I graduated a semester early.
I don't know where he is today, or what
he is doing...but he was the best thing to happen
to all the students out at Randolph. Thank you
Tommy...we will never forget all the hard work you did
for us. |
|
|
|
| I
found finance to be extremely challenging. Tommy would teach
us the book version, and then he would show us
the easier or quick version. He also showed us
EXCEL which has most of the stuff right there.
In addition, he brought in other books and charts to
show us how it is done in the real world.
Overall, he gave us a thorough glimpse of how
to do finance. I was very pleased with him
as a teacher. Most of the students were older
and also had him as an advisor. They spoke
of him as if he were a god or something.
At first I was a bit intimidated by him,
but I soon found out that he truely cared for
the students as people. Whenever I needed it, he
gave me much needed one-on-one time and I unsterstood what
they meant. He not only gave me tutoring, but
also helped me pattern a good academic plan and then.
He also gave me excellent advice on business overall
and because of him, I'm exactly where I want to
be in life. So I saw him as a
very good teacher and even better as a person.
I was from the main campus, and he was better
than anyone I had there. |
|
|
|
| Without
a doubt the best professor I had at TLU.
I was from the main campus and had to take
a few courses at Randolph. History or business...doesn't matter...he
was a tremendous instructor. |
