Super Boring.  His other classes are better.  I totally missed the point of the class.

Should do to do well...
Never chew gum.  Do talk a lot and make it sound productive, even if it's not.

Should know...
Not chew gum.  He tests you over every word said in class, random, useless or otherwise.

Overall: A
If you are engaged in class discussions, there is no excuse for being bored in class.  Usually he requires you to read a couple of books and fill out a take-home scantron of questions about them (almost all factual—just read the book and fill it out as you go).  The exam should be pretty much what he tells you it is.  Most of your learning will take place during class time if you do it right.

Should do to do well...
DON'T chew gum in ANY of Dr.  Hand's classes EVER.  Trust me on this one.  He likes to be challenged, but respectfully and with an open mind.  Deference, even if only in form, will get you a long way and save you a lot of trouble in your interactions.  Getting to know Dr.  Hand can be intimidating and a little scary, but it's well-worth it.  He has a reputation for being a bit harsh and rigid, but he really does care passionately about his students and about teaching, and you are missing out if you don't recognize that.

Should know...
Just do the work and the grade will happen.  If you get through the class with nothing but a grade, though, you've wasted your time.  Hand teaches to challenge you and make you think, and doesn't punish your GPA for class discussions that sometimes meander off the syllabus.  Take advantage of that.

Should know...
I would strongly advice against any mention of allegations of his smear campaign against John McCain.

Dr Hand suffers from Narcistic Personality Disorder.  If you confront him he will make your life a nightmare.  Always speak well of him to his face, if you challenge him about something make sure you let him “win” in the end, feed his ego and you will do well.
