I was responding to my experience at Drexel University. The preparation for the use of technology in libraries was very good (and has gotten better from what I can see.) The ALA accreditation and Drexel's reputation as one of the top 5 library schools in the US certainy was helpful to me. However, I went into public library work because of youthful idealism and the location of the library. I could not recommend work in public libraries to any young person who needed to support themselves unless they managed to get into the New York Research Library or possibly the Seattle Public. If I were to do it again, I would have attended a college that was more affordable, and that provided me with a better Return on My Investment. Many of the classes don't teach you how to apply what you read to the world of work, and there are not a lot of internship opportunities for all the students. Some students get internships/credit, but so many smart students are left out. Most big corporations don't have Iona College included on their college recruitment calendar. The big companies go to Manhattan College, Fordham, St. John's, and on and on, but not Iona College. The current President should be more concerned with helping Iona grads get jobs and current students get internships - they pay his salary. He should be less concerned with sports. I love sports, but we go to college to get jobs, not into Big Debt, with no returns and no suitable jobs. Ask for statistical data and reports on job placement. Where are Iona students hired? Salary ranges? How many and where are internships offered, and how many students get the jobs? You want to know the breakdown, and also how much money have recent alums donated to Iona College. I doubt, most have donated any because they are paying off their big undergraduate loans? If Iona was more concerned and cared about job placement, maybe Alums would give back. I know I won't be giving any back to Iona, not with this current administration at the top. The dean brags about how he has increased the number of students in the program in spite of the fact that it actually lowers the quality of education, and the field of social work is glutted with too many people for the number of available jobs, most of which are low-paying, non-thinking positions. They emphasize empirical evidence to the point that original thinking is discouraged and even suspect. Many of my professors criticized psychiatrists and psychologists in a very bitter and envious way. They are extremely narrow-minded, career-oriented academians and water carriers for the insurance industry's dumbing-down of psychotherapy. They think the social work profession is not well-respected because of the way Hollywood portrays social workers. Ha! Perhaps they should look at themselves, but then that would require perception and some understanding of human nature. I made the mistake of being honest and trying to actually learn something - very naive. Wed, 06 May 2015 01:57:20 GMT http://www.studentsreview.com/XX/XX_comments.html
