The campus is hemmed in by an ugly river which has the 19th ward (a black ghetto, practically) on the other side, a graveyard, and the massive parking lots of the medical campus. So, it is really isolating and difficult to travel anywhere... once I got a car and could get around more easily I quickly learned that there isn't much I wanted to visit or realistically could on a regular basis. I ended up feeling constantly stuck, developmentally, geographically, and socially. Plus, it is fucking expensive and the administration doesn't give a shit about an individual's undergrad experience, but only about upholding their reputation. I saw more money and effort go into what can only be described public relations stunts over impacting the experiences of the average student. It has too many students for the resources they provide. Upper level courses are still 150 or more students in a lecture hall, but with no outside labs or seminars. You're on your own, and if you can't find a group of students to regularly work with, then you will likely feel stupid or fail. Faculty advisers don't reach out->I don't think mine would recognize me in person. Overall, for how much this school costs and the resources it has, the undergraduate CS education is a shameful display. Professors, although not all are necessarily good at teaching, seemed to be satisfied with their place in the university and are willing to help if you reach out. In addition to this, don't expect to get a good GPA just because you did in high school. I see a lot of my peers stressing over how terrible their GPAs are compared to what they've had as high school students. I've just finished my first semester here and so far, it has been a positive experience. My friends who are at a large Ivy League feel incredibly stressed and their curriculum is cut-throat. Rochester's course work is very challenging, but the professors and TAs are supportive and want to help you learn. The nearby hospital provides amazing opportunities and the campus is not too big and not too small. Public safety has a big presence and the students are very approachable. It has been a great experience so far. Mon, 15 Aug 2016 06:16:53 GMT http://www.studentsreview.com/NY/UR_comments.html
