During the weekend there's not much to do except go out to the Ghetto, which is fun for the first couple of months but annoying and boring if you attempt to set foot there sober. From a girl's point of view, a lot of the girls are catty, rich, and spoiled. Most of them come from Catholic high schools and they have that air about them that says that they're better than you.
The thing is, I was one of those people who visited Dayton my junior year of high school and was set that I wanted to be here. I absolutely love the campus and I love my major. I like that when I walk to class I see different people that I know and they all say hi. It's nothing that the University is doing wrong, it's just that the people are different than the rural/suburban place that I grew up in.

I would say that if you do not fit into one group, you are very likely to find other students that you fit in with. Especially if you are willing to join clubs on campus. We have a huge variety of clubs and activities going on all of the time.

I would describe the campus atmosphere as laid back and perhaps a bit preppy, mostly laid back though. I feel that most students are nice (of course there are some exceptions, mostly freshmen that leave).
Most students go to class in t-shirts and jeans, or sweat pants and hang out and drink on weekends. If you do not drink, you can find parties that will not pressure you and there are a decent amount of students who do not go out.

Also, the city is very underrated, even though it is small to medium in size. People who say that the city is boring are the ones who have never gone there. Most students rarely leave the campus bubble. There are things going on all of the time if you are willing to look for them.

Being in UD's art program has its pros and cons. It definitely is geared toward VCD students (graphic design) and has a very good program. Also, there is almost always a teacher or upperclassmen in the building willing to help with a project. The students and teachers in this department are very close.
The cons are, the majority of the students in this program are not very dedicated, especially in the foundations classes. Also, UD does not have the best facilities and students need to buy their own equipment.

As a freshman, you can always find parties wherever you go and will barely ever have to pay to do it. The atmosphere of the student neighborhood is very appealing.

The nightlife at UD feels very midwest-like. Everyone drinks only beer, and people love to play drinking games all day and night. What you will NOT get at UD is the "party hard" vibe. With no decent bars around the area and no clubs it feels like everyone is just hanging out. Small parties are people talking drinking beer inside a house and big parties and people standing talking drinking beer outside in the yard. You wont go out to a high energy bar where you can meet new people and see girls dancing on the bar to really good music. To get the young party hard like you are a rockstar vibe you have to go downtown and few to none actually do. Everything is pretty dead by 3, and if something is going on it's considered a "late night" which consists of people hanging around talking...sort of like the whole night.

I am not saying that UD isn't fun, it's just not for everyone. If you are looking for a smaller school with lots of community, the ability to meet almost all your class by senior year, and small house parties UD is for you. If you are looking to dress like your going to a club and meet new people every weekend, it surely is not the place to go. US is much more laid back and a lot of people come here because of it.

The reason I came here in the first place was because I heard how AMAZING it was - - everyone is super nice, there is ALWAYS something to do one the weekends, and everyone includes everyone. Wow....I was wrong. The first few weeks fooled me, and I was having a great time. But one word that comes to mind when I think of UD as a whole = HIGH SCHOOL. Cliques are everywhere. If you didn't go to high school with people or you aren't "accepted" within the first couple of weeks, you're pretty much screwed. I'm a really outgoing person, I've never been rude or mean to ANYONE here, and try to include myself in going out, etc. but no one is nice about it. Hm...and Dayton is supposed to be a "nice" school? I personally already know 5 people who are transferring either at semester or at the end of the year. The education is fine and all, but when your weekends aren't fun there's not much of a college experience. And I don't even HEAR about sporting events...great college life. As Teacher Colleges go, UD is average at best. It is easy to see that the college does not get the funding like the others. The building was decrepit and the professors were either flighty, self-absorbed or both.
If you are looking to go into education, go somewhere else. The tuition is staggering and they make you buy a piece of junk overpriced laptop. There are far better and less expensive options for future educators.
