I'll be a sophomore next year, and I'd say my first year was definitely a success. The majority of my professors have been helpful and accessible, and if you want good grades, you can get them -- but that means studying hard. Not many professors are going to hand you an A on a silver platter (although, I did have one professor like that). Campus is beautiful in the fall and spring, but it does rain a lot, so it can be a little too grey here sometimes -- bring an umbrella and rain boots! WCU is less than 20 minutes away from King of Prussia Mall, and about 45 minutes away from Philadelphia (which is easily accessible through SEPTA). I am a frequent rider of SEPTA, and it is so convenient since there is a stop right on campus. As far as food goes...let's just say this school is lucky if it gets a passing grade. The Lawrence Center (main cafeteria)didn't even pass FDA inspection, and it was discovered that there were mice breeding in the building. Several times, I've picked up a bowl or a spoon that was supposed to be clean and noticed crap on it. Sykes is another option for dining, but you can't get homestyle cooking there (although there is a salad bar, but the service there is absolutely horrible -- they move so slowly and don't take their work seriously -- I've thought about complaining several times). Ultimately, if you opt for burgers and fries every day, you're going to put on the freshman 15. I've LOST 20 lbs. here, thanks to our state-of-the-art rec center and eating salads/fruits every day, so eating healthy is still possible. Town is cute and quaint, but completely boring if you're under 21. There are a bunch of nice restaurants, a small hotel, a hookah bar, general bars, and a few bookstores/beauty salons/etc. Nothing like Philly though. If you're looking for EXCITING nightlife, go to a school in Philly. Parties can be found here, but one time when I went out with my friends we walked around for an hour and couldn't find one thing. You either have to know people to get in or pay, which is annoying. Greek life does have a small presence here -- I rushed in the fall, but wasn't happy with my final bid, so I dropped out of recruitment. I plan on rushing again next fall. As a freshman, I am the treasurer of a club and president/editor-in-chief of our campus research journal. This means added stress to an already busy schedule, but if you want to get involved, you definitely can! You have to have some sort of priority scheduling to get the classes that you need the semester that you need them, especially if you're a science major. There are a lot of really good teachers here, but there are some that just don't teach. The math department is terrible, the only reason I passed Calc is because I had a good tutor. Extra curricular activities are ok, but not all of them are serious about getting stuff done. The traditional housing isn't bad, I recommend the south campus apartment complex if you're an upperclassmen or transfer student. The party scene isn't all its cracked up to be, and the only parties I keep going to are at my friend's apartment where I know most of the people there. Overall not a bad school but not the best. To succeed and have a good job when you graduate you really have to use all the resources here and put in alot of effort. But I have to say I love it so much more than I thought I would. I have made incredible friends here. The students and faculty really make the school. The academics are not too challenging but I have learned useful information for my major. There are so many different types of people that you are bound to make friends. The new dorms are incredible! I'm so glad I came to wc. I was placed into a triple dorm room. The situation became extremely uncomfortable as we were trying to be mature in our resolving it. However, WCU didn't intervene in any way to help the situation and it was not resolved until the Spring semester. The fact that the university puts three students into a two-person dorm room is appalling and nothing more than a way of saying "we don't give a fuck if there isn't space, give us your check and you can come in." We attempted, as best we could, to resolve the situation, which incoming freshman who have so many other things to focus on like school should not be dealing with in the first place, but WCU let it spiral way out of control and never helped resolve the situation. They simply let the students deal with all the hassles while they sat back and cashed our three separate checks paying for a two-person room. As for other phases of the university, they aren't much better and their advisors are an absolute joke. I had a different advisor each of the four semesters I was there and I was the same major the entire time. Spend your money on a better state university than this place. It may be like this everywhere, but at WCU especially, you are nothing more than a number to them. It creates stress for me and severe gaps in the learning process. I feel that I miss important parts of what they have to contribute to class discussion and in their lectures. This is more of a problem than the university seems prepared to admit. Wed, 24 Oct 2012 06:42:59 GMT http://www.studentsreview.com/PA/WCUP_comments.html
