It's extremely difficult to build friendships if you're not involved in greek life. The campus is surrounded by farmland and that's basically it. The only nice thing is having Newport 20 minutes away and Providence 30 minutes away. I had tons of friends in high school and loved to have fun but nothing good goes on here on the weekends. Many of the frats are known for taking advantage of girls and filled with disgusting pigs. If anyone ever askes you to go to clamjammers, just say no. Most parties are off-campus which can be a 20 minute ride so unless you're willing to pay 50 dollars for a cab, you're out of luck. The campus is basically one huge hill which is horrible to deal with in the snowy New England weather. School spirit here is minimum and the football team didn't win a game all year. Going to the men's basketball games is one of the few good things about this school. Academically, the school is alright. But it's living here which makes it unbearable. I made AMAZING friends who I still speak to and see regularly. The dorms my freshman year were god awful, as I was put in one of the worst ones with a terrible roommate. When I moved off-campus, life was much easier and I was a lot happier being there. The commute (usually 15-20 min) isn't terrible, but definately not convenient. You have to leave a full hour before your class begins to make sure you have time to park/ get on a shuttle/ walk to class. Other than that, the houses students live in (in Narragansett) are in close proximity to each other and a couple bars, which was fun. Rent was cheap (I found a huge house with 3 other roommates that I paid $375- $400 per month for). And majority of the houses are directly on or within walking distance of beaches/fishing spots/ scenic places.

When it comes to academics, the school is incredibly disorganized. Over the course of my four years, I had a ton of unecessary problems when it comes to paperwork, etc. I didn't find many advisors to be very helpful as they would give me contradicting information a LOT of the time. There were plenty of times I would have to fix errors that the staff were supposed to routinely handle in the first place. I stopped going to my advisor my sophomore year and began contacting the dean in my department (College of Arts & Sciences) anytime I had a question or needed academic advice. He was amazing and very helpful, and I still contact him periodically anytime I need help.

There were MANY times I would have to deal with difficult staff members and would be told one thing, only to go to a different department and be told something completely different. If you are not proactive and on top of things, you will find out about a problem months later- then they will tell you it's too late to correct.

I was also an out-of-state student, so I also paid full price for my tuition. Do I think it was 100% worth the money I paid? No. However, many of my fellow graduates, including myself, were hired immediately following graduation, which is a plus. I simply feel that for the amount I paid, the school should have been more on top of things- they do not communicate with fellow departments. If they do, it's news to me because I found many to be, for lack of a better word, incompetent.

I knew coming to college in a different state was going to be a change but i did not expect this- everyone that i have met or come in contact with is from rhode island. Not only that, but they all went to the same highschool or are from neighboring towns and know each other. uri is just an extension of high school for them and since they loved high school, they love uri. Well, I hated high school and I was excited to come to college and meet people who all wanted the same thing- to make new friends, have a good time, and still make academics a priority. Well, in my second year hear I have made zero friends and do nothing on the weekends if i stay here. Someone said join a club, so i did...the people are rude and unwelcoming. Someone said everything happens off campus, so i move off campus...i sit in my bedroom every night while my roommate (who are both from rhode island and live 5 min away) go out with their friends from high school with no invitation to me. And these are the people that i am supposed to be friends with? I feel like i'm wasting my time and my money because this whole "college experience" is terrible here. I could sell my life away to a sorority, but then again i do feel like graduating with some of my dignity. I have literally exhausted all options of trying to find a place where i belong at this university and i am tired of blaming myself for this isolation. Leave this university to the stuck up people who make up the majority of this campus; the rhode islanders.
