I worked in ministry all throughout college and can honestly say I did not learn a single thing from the classes I took about how to effectively do ministry. Everything is fluff here. People leave here looking for internships at age 23 because they have no idea how to actually do ministry because the school does not prepare them. It's simply not worth the money that you would pay. Save your money and go to a state school. It's not worth going here if you're going to graduate with debt. I learned very little and they overcharge tremendously. On campus housing is insanely expensive and food is bad. Half of the professors in the ministry department are arrogant and the students there follow their lead. The admissions and financial office is not rude, but they are extremely unhelpful. The entire place reeks of a lack of professionalism. Don't waste your money on this school. You will meet good people anywhere you go, but you shouldn't have to go into debt just to get a mediocre education at the hands of professors who just teach from books. If I wanted to learn from a book, I wouldn't have paid over 100,000 dollars just to attend this school. Chapels are lame, unless you grew up in an incredibly traditional environment. I've met a lot of good people here, but the school itself is a nightmare. There's a lot more you can get for your money. I bent over backwards to get in to the nursing program was accepted and even during the interview it was based on my beliefs. Not having all the same beliefs as the lady accepting she hated me from the start. I wasn't married and had a child and even during orientation. She made sure to single out myself to not shop for wedding dresses. I graduated from my previous college with a 4.0 and she made it impossible for me to continue even when I was passing HER class with a 99!! My husband was diagnosed with cancer this year and this is two years after I withdrew from school because she refused to show me a paper that I supposedly failed and decided to start billing me hundreds of dollars. I had to pay them to continue my nursing degree before I lost my credits because they were withholding my transcript. I definitely should have took up the other classmates offer in going to the news and paper because the lady there does not deserve her job. Far from Christian she is, I may not live my life to walk the straight line every day but I go to church and I believe and I have doubts but that should not have represented me. I was a student she will watch succeed farther than anyone else she has had!! So finished with Union and everyone think before you're sucked in! Regardless what they claim, they will not help you with financial aid. This is the most selfish group of people that I have ever had to deal with. I was an independent student, no help from my parents. I went in with a full ride but some scholarships were not for the full four years. Tuition went up drastically while I was attending. By my Junior year, I could barely find the loans to cover the leftover costs. I somehow managed. Even now, I still owe the school money and they refuse to give out my transcripts, making it almost impossible to find employment. Sun, 03 Feb 2013 11:33:12 GMT StudentsReview 1304-91773 1304-91773 1304 17 English Female Undergraduate Class 2008 4th Year Positive I loved attending Union - five years after graduating, all of my closest friends are still people I met at Union. I felt like I belonged for the first time in my life. I came from a Baptist, somewhat sheltered background, as do most of the students. I'd say the vast majority of students are eager to be exposed to new knowledge, however, and you won't find a more welcoming group of students. I will admit that the more liberal students were often closeted liberals. During the Bush/Kerry election, there was some controversy over a Kerry sign being hung up in one of the dorms. If you come from a conservative, evangelical background, you'll love Union. The faculty challenged me and made me feel like they cared about me personally. I remember one of my professors asking me to stay after class because he'd noticed I'd seemed depressed and he wanted to make sure everything was okay. My relationships with UU faculty made me feel as though I were a valued niece or granddaughter of some of the most renowned academics of our time. Professors often have students over to their homes for meals (not just favorites - there are events where you can sign up and pick professors to eat with). Most have a great sense of humor and challenging classes. Because they treat you like family, you have a huge desire as a student to meet and exceed their expectations. The groups I didn't mesh with as well were Res Life and some of the preppier groups like SAC and the fraternities/sororities. Res Life is very picky about open/closed dorm rules - if you have a guy in your room five minutes after dorms close so you can watch the end of a movie, you will be in trouble. It wouldn't be such a big deal if the rules were consistent. RAs often broke open/closed dorm rules, which was frustrating for regular students who tried their best to follow rules. I totally understand the need for open/closed dorms, but I think there needs to be some measure of gracefulness in the way the rules are handled and there needs to be more consistency among leadership (this might have changed since I was there). Still, it wasn't a big enough deterrent that I would discourage someone from attending Union - it's just something to be aware of. One more thing - I would agree with some that Union isn't necessarily the place that everyone will "find" themselves. It was absolutely where I grew the most in my life thus far, but I have had several friends who were very eager to graduate, move to big cities, and drink/party heavily because they didn't get that experience at Union. It's almost like there's a group of Union students who have a post-college "college experience" that goes on for a few years after they graduate. Most Union students, however, get jobs, marry, and begin families soon after graduating. Sun, 03 Feb 2013 11:33:12 GMT http://www.studentsreview.com/TN/UU_comments.html
