I had been warned that if I had any non-liberal views, that I should change them or find another school. I decided that this didn't apply to me as I was raised democrat and have left-leaning ways of thinking. Was I ever wrong. If you do not constantly subject yourself to the self-flagellation of white guilt, do not support self-diagnosis or are sympathetic to white men, you are labeled as a racist, ableist or any other "ist" they can conjure up. I was also disappointed to find that nearly no one attending Hollins is there to study. If the students put half as much time and effort into their schoolwork as they do in their thesis-long rants on Tumblr describing the neurotypical downfall of Steven Universe, their grades would look much better. Of course,so much as insinuating this would result in a witch hunt. I will say this for Hollins: they have excellent, accessible and dedicated professors. Unfortunately, their talents are wasted on a distracted, easily offended student body. Nearly every other day a mass email is sent out, apologizing for something said in a lecture,Halloween costumes (I wish I was joking) or for just existing in the 1800's. I'm all for being progressive, but the professors and faculty are trying to placate students who cannot allow themselves to be satisfied. There's always something to be up in arms about. Eventually, it gets tiresome and you wish your peers would contribute to their academics or society productively. If for nothing else, check out Hollins' amazing study abroad program (your tuition transfers with you!!!); I paid next to nothing to spend a semester in London. The faculty is very encouraging and makes an effort to get to know you as a student - very very close knit community. I definitely made the right choice in choosing Hollins. The community is so accepting, helpful and at the same time it is very challenging as well; may that be in or out of class. I can choose classes from a wide variety of departments. And its so wonderful to have such a dedicated faculty who are so approachable and insighful, and care about our success. As a recent graduate, I am proud to have attended Hollins. The faculty is super helpful; I never had any difficulty reaching a professor with questions. The student body is very involved in campus life. There are endless clubs and activities, so everyone finds their place on campus. Our traditions are ridiculous but so much fun! Plus, the campus is gorgeous. Nothing beats walking around the loop. I can't wait to come back for reunion! They lure everyone in with the promise of sisterhood, and education in a safe environment. This is a lie. Hollins is full of a bunch of women who stick to their cliques and exclude outsider. If you don't agree with everything a minority or lesbian student has to say than you are a bigot, an anti-feminist and they hate you. The campus itself is not safe at all. It is incredibly easy for anyone to walk/drive around campus without being questioned and it takes security over 15 minutes to respond to any call they receive. Several men come onto campus and harass the girls and there have even been break ins and a rape in the apartments. The university has done nothing to up security after these incidents. If you have a problem with your roommate the res life people will basically tell you to suck it up and ignore you. I had a roommate that stole from me and watched porn while I was in the room and res life told me I had no grounds to change roommates or move out. So in summary the only good thing about Hollins are the academics and even some of the departments are sub par compared to any other college, even a community college.
