I am a very open minded African American female but I still felt a little out of place.

I most definitely spent my weekends either taking long walks around the campus or going to Wal-Mart. That was about it for social life. The classes are pretty straight forward and they do lack creativity. This really isn't the school for "artsy" people. If you are different in any way you will stand out like a raisin in a bowl of oatmeal.

Even with all of that said there is nothing particularly "wrong" with Longwood. It is a respected school where you will receive a decent education. I think it just depends on what floats your boat. I realized that the major which I was in did not really point me in the direction that I wanted to go, which brings me to my first problem with Longwood. At Longwood it is almost mandatory that you know exactly what you want to study in the beginning because if you don't it will be almost impossible to change majors and graduate on time. Also the majors offered here, while they are numerous, are sometimes very vague and impractical. Also due to the dedication to small class sizes it is incredibly hard to get all the classes that are necessary for your degree. This can cause serious issues.

Another bad thing about Longwood is how the university tries to control every aspect of the students lives. Patrolling the campus with a police force modeled on Chesterfield County who think they are god and attempt to charge students as often as possible(as well as RA's who SUCK). Despite all of this there are ways to get around these walls, join a club or Greek organization to have fun and meet interesting people who make it possible to live in Farmville lol. No matter what the red tape there is always something to do either on campus or in the 5 streets containing house parties nearby. I have grown to love Longwood due to its dedicated faculty who really care and the friends who are always there for you. I honestly think that there is something here for everyone just be SURE that you know what you want to major in or you may be in for some problems. The teachers here are great minus a few bad ones but thats acceptable for a university. There is always something to do outside of a huge greek life. The work load is suprisingly challengeing if you actually take classes that will challenge you. The guy girl ratio is amazing. The sports are D1. and everything about this university is improving. It's definatly not what it used to be. Granted the police down here are extremely horrible, with 1 out of 4 students expected to get arrested for alchy citations while they stay here. The cops have nothing better to do in this town than screw with students, granted there are at least 50 cop cars here in no less than 2 square miles of populated area... I went to Longwood because I had set my hopes on another school which was GMU and did not get in. I waited to the last minute to apply to other schools and Longwood was one of the two I was accepted into(the other was Radford). It is not a bad school. However, if you have high expectations for the whole college experience I dont suggest going to Longwood. It is in Farmville Va! There is not a whole lot going on in Farmville. There's a walmart and a few other stores and fast food joints and a movie theatre. But there just is not a lot going on in this town. Weekends can be pretty boring! I spent my weekends riding the Fab which is a small bus that goes around Farmville. The friends that I did make pretty much went home every weekend so if you intend to stay on the weekends make sure you find a social group who chooses to do the same. Most of the students at Longwood are all pretty much the same. Everyone is basically an education major. And the school is mostly Caucasian girls who wear Vera Bradley religiously. There is just not a lot of diversity at this school or too many unique persons. Longwood however does have a really nice gym that was just built is has an indoor track, rock climbing wall and lots of equipment. The classes at Longwood are not too challenging. There are some hard classes but overall the classes are not extremely hard. The library is pretty nice and stays open till twelve. I think a lot of guys like the school. I mean the school is like 70% all girls. So if your a guy you might enjoy it. The party scene at LU wasnt too much for me either but then there are people who enjoy it. So basically, LU is a school for certain type of person, not everyone fits in there. I am transferring now to ODU or VCU. Longwood was just not the school for me. If you choose to go to Longwood. I would say really make an attempt to meet people and make friends so that you can get thru being there for four years. Because it really can be boring and slow at times. One big positive of Longwood though is the small classes. Most all my professors knew my name. You really arent too much of a number at Longwood. If you ever need the registrar's office to do something for you. Stay ont them!!!! or else they will not do what you ask them to do.
