They also gave me a great financial aid package, but that's how they suck you in.....they chip away at it every year, and you end up paying close to full sticker price in senior year (which is a LOT). Don't bother with the Honors College - the only benefit is nice dorms, but you pay extra for them as well. The information on Princeton review about "average loans" is false - I don't know anyone who escaped UVM with less than $60,000 in student loans. The campus is gorgeous and the students are friendly - those are about the best things I can say about the school. Many classes are taught by TAs who have little idea what they are doing, and the professors are often inaccessible. I had to take a class required for my major three times because the first two professors didn't speak English, so I had to drop the course twice. Student Health is also a joke - if you have an ongoing medical condition, find a real doctor in Burlington and go there. The food is not horrible, but not great. There is plenty of social life if you are interested - lots to do on and off campus. Most people move off campus in junior year, and the apartments in Burlington are expensive and in horrible condition. The landlords don't want to maintain them because they rent to students who trash them. You can find an internship if you look, but most are unpaid. Bottom line: UVM is a decent place to go if you are an in-state student, but way too expensive for a mediocre education for an out-of-state student. I should have gone to my own state university (UNH). My experience lived up to the "Public Ivy" tradition the university flaunts. I was challenged academically by my professors and peers and expanded my perspectives and world views. Faculty and staff were accessible at all levels. I was able to meet with professors to try to work through academic struggles (without bending their standards). I was even able to meet with multiple deans for advice when I sought to change my major. Socially, I had a ton of fun, despite not skiing or snowboarding until after graduation. I am not a smoker and didn't drink much before turning 21 and was still able to make a ton of great friends and plenty of memories. UVM is what you make of it. As the motto goes, "Studiis et Rebus Honestis," it is for studies and other honest pursuits. Show up and live the life you want to live, study what you want to study, and use the faculty and staff to your advantage. If you need help, talk to your professors and/or go to the Center for Academic Success. Talk to your professors, advisors, and deans. They are humans, and super helpful ones at that. Most importantly, get to career services early and often, find internships, and build a network. I was not a great student in high school. I'm from central jersey and looked at this school and it immediately became my first choice. Ill admit, its crazy expensive and its full of socialists. Seriously, socialism is preferred here, not capitalism. Anyway, no one would have thought that I could persue premed and it is the hardest thing I've ever done. But this school has a really great education that is not bullcrap... unless you are a non-science major then its a joke. The university-wide requirements are a joke. When it comes to premed, I know multiple people that have gotten into medical school. And if you are premed thats pretty much all that counts right? You don't need to go to Harvard. If you work hard enough, it is very possible to get to med school from UVM. I recently got into a Post-bac premed program. Bottom line, if you work hard enough, this school will get you where you wanna go. If you choose not to work that hard..you will do fine as well..but don't expect to last 6 months in one of the science majors.
