While I don't keep up with my faculty mentors as much as I should, I know they would be there for me in a flash. Beloit completely transformed me. I had many friends who went to private liberal arts colleges, but none of them got challenged to become completely different people, all for the better. Beloit puts you out into the world, challenges you to practice what you do in the classroom and makes you a better speaker, writer, thinker, numbers person, critical thinker, group worker and everything else you need to be a strong employee. If you're someone who wants the whole job process lined out for you, don't come to Beloit. If you want a list of internships that are going to be handed to you, don't come to Beloit. Beloiters don't follow other Beloiters, just like they don't follow students from their high school. I can't think of what Beloit could have given me that it didn't. I wish I would have known more about how much grant money Beloit gives to students for special projects and research. This includes students, faculty, and administration. Beloit may be a small school, but faculty and administration really care about the students, and provide us with such wonderful opportunities. And Beloit students are so dedicated and genuine, and end up great use and taking advantage of all the opportunities. Also, Beloiters are so diverse (ethnicity, personality, interests, home) that it makes both the social scene and class room experience all the more interesting. Beloit isn't for everyone though, so speak with Admissions, faculty, current students etc. and visit campus/stay overnight if you can, it's not hard to leave once you get here but it's still a pain in the ass and most people who want to leave any school, rarely ever actually do. Either way, make the best of your situation, it's not that hard!

One one hand, Beloit has been a wonderful place for me, academically. I specifically chose Beloit because of its Creative Writing program, and I love the education I've received here. I have been so impressed with nearly every professor I've had, I feel they care about nurturing me as a student and a writer, and I know I have learned so much and become a much better writer thanks to my time here. This has been the right place for me, from an academic standpoint.

Unfortunately, socially, Beloit did not give me the college experience I was looking for. That shouldn't be underestimated - more than half of what you learn in college doesn't happen inside a classroom.

For a place that thinks of itself as so open-minded and accepting, I sure had a hard time fitting in. Many students are friendly and interesting, but it was always difficult to get to know them beyond a surface level because people are very clique-y here. I felt suffocated by the over the top liberal and "politically correct" attitude on campus. It was difficult to ever feel like I could just be myself. If you're not into Dr. Who and social constructs and raging feminism, it'll be difficult to find a group of friends.

Overall, the writing education I received was wonderful and many professors here are brilliant. You just need to weigh how important a well-rounded college experience is to you. Beloit was too small and it suffocated me. It was not the community I had been told it was. If I could do it over, I would pick a different school.

I received as much individual mentoring as I asked for and received grades that reflected my hard work. A degree from Beloit is 100% what you make of it. If you want to slack off, you'll be able to get by. If you want to work your tush off, you will be warmly rewarded by unique opportunities (I was able to attend a graduate conference in my field as a guest with my professor/advisor). I found the faculty very supportive and involved in the success of their students. There are no graduate students here stealing the spotlight. If you are politically conservative, very religious, primarily focused on sports, or socially conservative (racist/sexist/homophobic etc) you will NOT find a place for yourself at this institution. Beloit is not perfect (what institution is?), but students are largely young liberals challenging each other to achieve new heights of acceptance and critical thinking. If you want to attend graduate school, Beloit will prepare you very well and give you the opportunities you need to build a strong resume. I double majored with a minor, received a couple of academic awards with monetary gifts, was valedictorian of my class, was awarded a tuition-free honors term to complete an independent project, and made some amazing friendships-- I couldn't have asked for a more supportive school.

Student body? Lots of hipsters smoking cigarettes and experimenting with unique fashion choices. A large number of LARPers. Sports people are the minority on campus and frequently complain about discrimination. Being mainstream is not valued or encouraged on this campus-- the weirder the better.

The city of Beloit is generally terrible. Downtown is kind of sweet, but there is little to no night life and the town is not especially safe. I lived off campus my senior year, and I did not always feel comfortable walking the 2 blocks off campus to my home at night. If the quality of the surrounding town is important to you, do not go to Beloit. You will hate it. However, while the city itself rather stinks, the campus has activities nearly every night-- lectures, movies, parties, gallery openings etc.

Also, be forewarned: Beloit College does not have a lot of money. The money they do have, they spend on funding their students with scholarships. The buildings here are a bit run down, there is no wireless internet in the dorms, there's nothing fancy. Just a good, solid, liberal arts education. I will say this: in recent years, considerable fundraising money has gone towards a campus beautification project that is coming along nicely. Many buildings have been restored and repaired. The campus itself (the grounds) look as lovely as ever. Truly a beautiful campus, even if interiors of the buildings sometimes fall short. Still, if you want a school with tons of extra money, Beloit isn't that school.

Research this school carefully... if you're a good fit, you will have the most amazing experience of your life. If you go here just because you happened to get in, you will regret it. Beloit is unique, and it's intended for a unique type of student. This is a school for someone who really appreciates and wants a liberal arts education.
