In some regards this may seem good, yet .... we have very little to work with here. There is only one large room where all art classes are held so it is impossible to leave large pieces of work here. There is extremely limited space for storage of any kind. Suggestions have been made to the school yet nothing is being done about it. It is just not one of Naropa's stronger departments. There are a few very good teachers in this department and then there are a few adjunct teachers here that lack the experience to really justify the price tag of the course. It is really a hit or miss school for serious art majors. Really take your time, look around, perhaps sit in on a few classes before you commit. I came here after a dexual assault at my last university expecting to fall into the arms of a compassionate faculty and staff. Things were beautiful here until faculty decided to interfere in my personal life. From that moment on, my blinders were removed. While the instructors here have been wonderful for the most part, they don't seem to understand that their rules don't always translate to the "outside world". Trying to get ahold of the dean or professors outside of class is like pullin teeth. Scheduling is most often done through email, and staff will ignore urgent messages for weeks. The student housing is supposed to be a sober living community, but that's a complete joke. Rules are enforced only when the student fails to "play the system". There are a lot more politics going on at this university than teaching. I have learned some wonderful tips and tricks here, but my stellar academic record has been sullied by staff incompetence.
I am looking forward to getting out of here. The lack of organization and communication coupled with the bad environment is excused by their religious and spiritual beliefs, which gives a horrible impression on Buddhism.
If you are looking for a place to learn and get a degree that will impress those not from this sort of a community, don't waste your time and money.
While the instructors may have the students best interest in mind, clear communication is constantly lacking. I have never before been unable to get a clear idea of what the assignment is.
If you're trying to stay sober and you don't want to deal with kids smoking an drinking in the dorms on a fairly constant basis, stay away from campus housing.
Naropa is great for some, but not for the serious student. This institution is a money sucking machine that tries to trap students in their system. If you don't kiss ass, you're not going to be treated with respect. A poor excuse for a Buddhist institution.

I love the self growth as well as academic growth curriculum. Naropa attempts to educate your whole self, not just your academic side. The professors are available, and in the psychology department, they are also great therapists. This makes their ability to lead group discussions all the better. I feel that the faculty members care deeply about the students and are highly qualified , intelligent and caring human beings. Furthermore I feel that the faculty are constantly engaged in revisiting and improving the course materials in order to provide a challenging and grounded experience for students, and to prepare them for work in their field. Naropa was my third college and I found it to be just what I was looking for. I will say honestly that there were areas of the curriculum I found lacking, but I had already experienced this at two other schools. So, that didn't really phase me. Look, all colleges are going to have prerequisite classes that don't really seem very useful or relevant; Naropa is no different. Naropa is not for everyone, that is for sure, but I wouldn't say it is for "older people" either. As a psychology student I was presented with plenty of traditional Western Psych training with the supplementation of very unique and helpful Eastern perspectives. I think this HAS given me a great advantage in the real world.
Also, Naropa was a lot of fun! A LOT of fun! So many people will go to college and really not experience the sense of community that a small college like Naropa offers. Boulder in general is a great party town, and I think 50% of being a student in college is coming of age and having a wild time. Boulder is great for that, and I found the atmosphere of Naropa conducive to making so many friends that I continue to be in touch with. No other college that I have experienced has offered this. When you look back on college years from now, a lot of the stuff people may criticize Naropa for will seem insignificant. I know many people going to other 4 year colleges in the area, and I have to say I feel sorry for them. They have no sense of community, and many of them seem totally unengaged, like they are just trying to get through this daunting task and move on. You will never find that at Naropa. You will have memories and friends to last a lifetime, leave being at peace with yourself and the world around, and really be well-rounded as a person, not just a brain.
