When you visit, the campus is gorgeous, and everyone here is very friendly and helpful. There are plenty of interesting classes, and all of my professors have been around to talk and for help in office hours. The student activities are great, and Miami is a great city for cultural events and the beaches are a nice way to relax. The only negatives I can think of are the excessive partying at clubs on the weekends, and that there are a lot of students who could care less about anything BUT partying. But, you'll find this at every college, and overall--visit! It's a great school, and if you take advantage of all of the opportunities available here, there's no doubt you'll have a great four years. I'm definitely coming back next year! After the introductory programming, CS students are exposed to a large amount of theory without understanding its purpose or applications of it. This could have been avoided by framing the content with better examples so that students can appreciate where/how the theory fits into computing.

My experience turned around completely with the 300+ level courses with several opportunities to apply prior concepts. By this time, I started to grasp how things fit together by myself - something the faculty should have been more helpful with. After completing an internship and working more closely with other students/professors, my motivation increased dramatically. The last two years have been great, and I'm headed to graduate school in the same field.

The CS department is quite small, which has its benefits and drawbacks. I would like to see the department expand to perhaps twice its current size, because there aren't enough courses to satisfy in-depth exploration of certain topics. That said, the number of students in each lecture is comfortable for the majority of classes. Most students seem to be of average intellect, but I found a surprising (considering the size of the dept.) number of brilliant peers in my graduating class.

I started in Accounting in the School of Business and found it too difficult so I switched to Finance and switched to Marketing for the same reason. There is always something to do in Miami: the Grove, South Beach, downtown, the Keys, music festivals throughout the year, and Halloween activities. There is always something going on in the area. Internships are available since UM is in a big city. The students can be focused on image, but when I got to know people through group projects, I found many students had viable ideas to start their own companies and some already did. Most students here really are motivated, but do restrict academia to the classroom or when doing schoolwork. The administration is very responsive to students concerns and professors are helpful during office hours. Also, the school will open spaces in classes during registration to keep students from being locked out, if you register for classes earlier rather than later.
