It's also a great opportunity for lazier people, because most of the classes I've taken are easy but not to the point of being boring. They've taught me a lot about my major, made me think, made me learn, and have not frustrated or bored me in the process. This only applies to the on-campus classes, however- as for the online classes, they are utter crap. I did all of my highschool online, so I have some previous online experience. I have found the teachers, over and over, in these online classes to be more interested in tricking you than in teaching you. I have also found the teachers to be unfriendly and more interested in fulfilling some kind of personal vendetta against students than in making you think about the subject. Thankfully, not the case with the 'real' classes, as I've had primarily great teachers there who care about you knowing the SUBJECT more than the textbook.

As for the atmosphere of the place, it could really use some work. Half of my classes, at any given time, are in cold, white-walled, crummy-carpetted rooms with no windows. If there are windows, the blinds are always shut. One of my classes is actually in the basement... creepy. Parking is also becoming horrific as time goes on.

I'm learning disabled, so I have the opportunity to go in to the learning center to take tests- but really, any time I've been in there, it's louder and more distracting than the classroom. Even the staff there was chatting and playing with their computers, while students fought with printers and talked to each other- horrible environment if you have any attention deficiency. This brings me to the next issue- if you intend to enroll here, I hope you're not dyscalculic. They expect you to get by without a calculator as though you have no disability with computations. So basically, if you're privileged with normalcy, you'll do fine- if your brain is wired in a way that means you can't learn the 'normal' way, though, good luck, you're on your own. They seem to want to do the bare minimum they can to be technically accomodating the learning disabled.

Summarizing: On-campus teachers good, online bad. Environment bad, learning disability assistance bad.

A lot of friends of mine have extra time to work vigorously and still be able to earn good grades. If you only want to save money and improve your chance to transfer to get into better universities (most students transfer to Temple or Westchester university from here), you may choose to study at DCCC. While this may appeal to non-traditional students, those looking to save money prior to transferring to a four year university, people wanting to obtain nothing further than an associates degree, or those attempting the odd course here & there for personal enrichment, students seeking the “typical college experience” should be prepared for a let down.

But getting back to those who aren’t expecting that “typical college experience”, DCCC offers a convenient campus location with hours that appeal to both day and evening students. I work full time and never had an issue with scheduling or contacting staff & the financial aid office.

Additionally, you can not beat the prices. At the 4 year college I eventually transferred to, one semester is costing me more than an entire year at DCCC. Let me stress the cost savings…this is the main reason I attended DCCC for 2 years prior to transferring out. Private school is significantly more expensive, and 2-less years there equals significantly cheaper student loans.

I will say that the students in my evening classes tended to be older as the majority of people enrolled in night courses are working adults. But this proved fortunate as the younger students seemed content with pulling nothing higher than C’s….the lowest grade one can get to transfer out to a 4 year college.

I’ve found that teachers employed at night were more likely to have day jobs and were thus less likely to be available as compared to those employed full time by DCCC. But the teachers are competent and make themselves readily accessible - albeit it may not fit your schedule.

Course work was challenging enough. I felt as if I got my monies worth and am confident that I left that school with more knowledge than I had at my initial enrollment. But with that being said, I still feel as one should expect a heavier course load at typical colleges.

I have yet to meet any instructors that do not like their job or that turn away students or make you feel uncomfortable being around.

If you're looking for a "traditional" college feel -- for a lot of clubs / sports, recreational facilities, etc -- this is probably not the place for you. Afterall, it is a community college, not a major college or university. But if you want something affordable and just want to go to class, do the work and get your credits, it's fine.

This is not the most challenging school in the world, but they won't just hand you a certificate, either. Full-time students that don't work or work just one or two days per week may say that it's dull and not challenging. But if your like me and working full-time and not able to take more than six hours per semester, it's not incredibly difficult, but still informative and enjoyable.

Good school to consider for working students and students on a limited budget. If finances are not an issue or if you're a gifted learner, you might want someplace else.
