I just wanted to say that it's really a mixed bag as far as the people here. I lived in the dorm, I was really young, my boyfriend was a long way away and some girls were GREAT and asked me to join a sorority without even going through rush, other girls were AWFUL and making noise in the hallway and like daring me to look at them to try to start a fight. I also got accused of being a racist because I did not want a roomate, even though it had nothing to do with race I just wanted a private room, my best friend wanted to room with me and I got scared to move her in because I was worried the anger against me would escalate further. I am NOT a racist and that really hurt my feelings, well at least people told me what they were thinking on that but it still really hurt my feelings. The dorm people are also crazy strict, I know one girl who had to do community service for having CANDLES in her room and the dorm people took them from her. SO one other thing is that the campus is heartbreakingly in the middle of nowhere, it may be two hours from Atlanta and one from Albany but once you get there it is over by Alabama in far West Georgia, lots of trees and woods and it feels really far out there if you know what I mean. Nothing against Alabama or anywhere else. It's practically on the border and the feel of it is different than the rest of Georgia, and it feels more like maybe Alabama would I guess? Just has a different feel. The generosity shown to me by the nicer girls on campus was amazing, I didn't have a car and they were so nice to give me rides to go grocery shopping, etc, but this did not make up for the fact that the place was too strict, felt too isolated, and it really hurt my feelings being called a racist when I'm not. So there was just too much tension there. There WERE a couple of snobs there too, but not near as much as one would encounter in say, South Georgia. At any rate I overall look back on it as a painful period in my life and I left after one semester. Good classes, but the feeling of isolation is profound especially if you don't have a car (nothing I mean nothing off campus within walking distance! Unlike many colleges...there were buses but just not frequently enough). My boyfriend came home and I did not stay and join the sorority. I suppose I could have made it work had I joined and moved in with my friend, or with the sorority BUT without a car I did not see it being feasible, unfortunately. I also wonder what it would have been like for non traditional students-it's all about the greek life there and I think I remember meeting some non traditional students who felt a bit isolated because they weren't a part of it, I could easily see that happening. This school has quite a few advantages. First of all, it's a small university with less than 3,000 student. So you can actually get that one-on-one attention from the professors. This school sort of feels like a private institute. The campus is pretty safe and most of the students and faculty are approachable. This college is also very affordable. You can really stretch your wallet at this school. On the other hand, there are some disadvantages. The college is located in a small town setting (Americus, GA), which means that there is little social events. You can about 40 mins. to surrounding towns if you're looking more sociable activities. However, Alanta is about 2 hrs north of this town. Also, parking is scarce so if you want to get a good parking spot, you have to arrive to class about 15 mins earlier. There is no football team so basketball and soccer are the main sporting events. If you're looking for a small private-like school then this is the place for you.
