I never feel like I get the answers I am looking for when talking to any staff (Student Advisement Center or specific schools). Apart from the staff, the student body is like a small high school with a lot of different cliques. The courtyard (main part of campus) is ALWAYS crowded, where people are rude and won't move out of the way. The University's online system called Desire2Learn rarely ever loads. I constantly have problems accessing my courses. If you are having to apply to a pre-professional school (Nursing, Business, etc.), you cannot meet with an advisor of that specific school until you have 48 hours completed. Each time I tried to meet with a nursing advisor, I was unable to. The staff would place me with a random advisor that knew nothing about the nursing program. It was a waste of my time. Specifically for the nursing school, I turned in my application 2 months ago and they stated we would receive our decisions within 4-6 weeks. It's now been 8 weeks and I have yet to hear anything besides the generic response "The committee is still making decisions..." Overall, nobody is helpful here. Getting admitted into GSU isn't the problem, the problem occurs when students are close to graduating and then find out that, another course has been added to their major.. (YAYYAYYAYY!! Not). Oh Yes, the math competency requirement which keep student's from receiving their degree. Word of advice, get permission from your college to take the math class else then transfer it over to GSU. I took classes at perimeter bc they was cheaper. It saves you time and alot of heart ache, trust me I speak from experience. Recently, I completed the math competency requirement and I must say it was a up hill battle with GSU. SOOOOO GLAD GSU is out my life!! Police drive around in circles for whole day without stepping out of the car. the crime level is very high in Atlanta. GSU is basically a community college in Atlanta. It looks and feels like an inner city high school. Most students commute and there is no room for student development through volunteerism, philanthropy, research and student clubs. Classes are rampant with grade inflation. Faculty don't seem to care about what they teach. Professors here are paid just as much as professors at UGA and Georgia Tech despite the huge disparity between the budget and quality of the programs. Most GSU programs are unrepresented in national rankings, and I question the value of a degree earned here. The student body is very violent. I think this is a recent thing. We get crime blotters nearly every week. The campus is very rundown and "ghetto". Georgia State touts diversity like anything, however, the strongest presence on campus is African-American. You can easily tell that the diversity cover is a blanket statement. GSU caters to mostly minority students and it makes me(a white male) uncomfortable to see that there are seven different African student groups, but ZERO groups catering to European culture. Many student groups exist at Emory, Georgia Tech, UGA and other schools for German students, Spanish students, Italian students, English students..there is nothing at GSU. There is no tradition or sense of unity on campus apart from small niches in campus housing. I have not enjoyed my time here. I am a part-time student, and I wish there were other options for students such as myself. I would not recommend this school to a senior in high school. During my visit to campus, I was told about all the great things about GSU including national rankings in certain areas by their recruiters(accounting and IT management being my major is one of these areas). An example would be that I was told GSU ranked as one of the top "Best college dorms" in the nation. Since, I have discovered that this was simply false. The residence halls here are converted hotel(Piedmont north) and jail-cell looked complexes(Lofts and Commons) The students here are extremely backward and ghetto, as represented by DRAKE the singer rapping about GSU filled with his slutty exes and GSU being ranked as the fastest growing sugar baby college. This incident made national news and can be explored further by a prospective student. Because of GSU's reputation, I have had people try to label me as a lazy cigarette-addicted bum for attending this university.
