This "mentor" was absolutely horrible to me. She ended up going behind my back to complain to the principal of her school, my field placement supervisor and the university. NOT ONCE did she EVER come to me about any issues she had. I would submit my lesson plan and the only comment she gave me was "Looks good." So I had a meeting with the the people running the program and was told I should have been able to "read between the lines" of the "mentor teacher's comments. I was removed from the placement and was made to look like an incompetent fool, when I know I am not. Now, this ended up working out because I was then placed in a REAL mentor teacher's classroom for the 14-15 school year. This magnificent teacher not only taught her class, but taught me as well and stated at the end of the school year I would be a wonderful teacher and I was the best student teacher she ever had. Also through out the program, there were many classes (classroom management, specifically) where we created freaking PINTEREST BOARDS. This truly was a hindrance when I became a first year teacher. So many of the classes were not based on real classroom scenarios, but created to make it easy for our teacher when we were in class. There was so much the program did not do to help us as beginning teachers AT ALL!!! So many of us in the cohort kept in touch and we were all complaining how the program did not actually prepare us for the real world of teaching. They do "care" about you, but the nursing school has some of the dumbest rules. An "C" in that school is 75 or higher. You can fail a class if you have a 74.9 because the teachers do not believe in rounding. Another one is that you have to make a "100" on one medication calculation tests or you automatic lose 10 points off of your final grade in a class. Some of the smartest people in my cohort failed a class because of these unnecessary rules. I have done pretty well, survived these rules, and graduated from this school, but I would not recommend this school to anyone unless you want to be in the mess. BUT the admission department, registration department, counselors, and bookstore (pretty much everyone outside of the teachers) are not helpful. As far as admission goes I had a hold on my account because someone failed to review my transcripts although all had shown to be received. I had to contact them, and they were still telling me I had to take the course, although I had already taken two college level courses. The bookstore never answers phone calls or emails, and being a distant learner those are the only two options I have. They responded a week later, stating that I had missed the deadline to return my books even though the books were listed as a requirement on their website. My counselor, responded to my initial email, but never gave a response to any email trying to follow up on any new updates. What they conveniently don't mention is the standards are lower. It seems they have picked quantity over quality. It does pay better, afterall. This leaves the classroom environment an aggravating place. There are students that can't write a simple paper or approach professors with questions speaking full sentences. Crime is going up and I wouldn't be surprised if there's a connection. The surrounding city is dull. Student life and environment is a horrible joke. The school keeps growing and parking has become a disaster. Someone had a smart idea to remove parallel parking on campus at the same time. Now students are parking on a dirt patch outside of campus. I don't even know who that land belongs to. Professors in my department have been awesome. I guess they're the light at the end of the tunnel.
