Many say student housing is a mess and unorganised, I would be among those who would say it. Student housing does an awful job with regards to their mail and have habits of losing your mail, so if you are planning on getting any packages, I would put little trust in their capability in getting it to you safely and soundly. Their student housing system in general is outdated and residential directors are not educated in advancements the university has made when it comes to inclusion. Student housing must do better and make a better effort on accommodating students. The dorms are overpriced and outdated, some of them even are falling apart as I was put into a dorm that needed constant repairs due to faulty pipes, most of them do not have air conditioning and a few buildings are not accessibility friendly.
If you are transgender and out of state, do not go to this university. They are incompetent when it comes to your mail and will mix it up easily and potentially sent it back because of your name being different than it is legally. I have been back and forth with student housing for 3 years out of my 4 due to this incompetence and I can only imagine there will be difficulty with my 4th year as well.
If I weren't engrained into the credit system, as it is also incredibly difficult to get your credits to transfer over to another university if you were to transfer, I would have switched universities almost immediately. No one likes being here, except for freshmen who do not care about class, just hang out in the dorms smoking weed and drinking, then drop out. If you've got the time and money to do that come here by all means... but everyone else is a broken-spirited drone, frustrated by classes taught by passionless teachers and by trying to wring any knowledge or compassion out of this bone-dry rag of a place. Also-- you cannot graduate in 4 years in most majors. The classes you need simply will not be available. Housing, cashiers, registrars, and each individual colleges/majors DO NOT communicate with one another so you have to make sure they are on the same page yourself.
If you do decide to come here, (why??), make sure to stay on top of the administration. Maybe try to get close to the teachers and they might regain faith enough to actually teach something, I'm not sure.. BUT ALSO: the apathy of the student body cannot be overstated. This leads to miserable, silent class discussions but also it leads to no one even having the motivation to apply for scholarships, so APPLY FOR THEM-- a bunch of money goes unawarded each year simply because everyone is sitting on their asses. You are extremely likely to get money if you put forth any effort.
Also, if you have any fishy fees on your account, I know it is a pain to contact all the different, uncaring people about them but please do go through the appeals process, it's happened to me where they just go "oops don't know why that charge was there" and take a month to rescind it. I figure they rightly assume most people won't go through the trouble to contest it and they can just scam the student body... The campus & buildings are falling apart & are poorly maintained.

UH loses positions & classes every year, never to be reinstated. Therefore, students cannot graduate in four years w/o cross-matriculating at Chaminade U. or HPU. Mostly, it's a 6-year graduation rate - AND THAT IS JUST 48%! UH's four-year graduation rate is 17% - lowest in the nation!

UH never has any money for innovation or renovation & is completely strangled by the State & by its Board of Directors.

UH's faculty is the oldest in the nation.

It's students are mostly from Hawaii & are among the least intellectually curious students I have ever met.

Institutional racism abounds (very anti-white & black).

There is no U district where students can try new things out together or bond off-campus.

Rents in Honolulu are the highest in the nation as are expenses - not kind to students from the Mainland.

Students are ALL a-political.

Very few UH programs are good, with a few exceptions. None are excellent.

UH is on the cutting-edge of nothing.

It's the only game in Honolulu.

UH is near the best beaches & surf in the world, has year-round sunshine, & it's very easy to get a 4.0 GPA for transfers. But that is not enough!

UH-Manoa is the worst public university in the nation, IMO.
