As for the social life, the college smothers it. They treat students like 5 year old children. the resident life staff is more interested in punishment and fines than safety. the surrounding town is no better. the police force is one of the best funded in the state (despite the town having a population of 1,500) because they arrest a student for (literally) anything illegal that is done. I friend of mine was arrested under paraphernalia charges because he had a lighter and was speeding (he smokes cigarettes).
Oh, and the food is terrible. If you attend this college, you will spend at least 500-1000 dollars extra just to eat off campus because of the atrocities that they attempt to feed you.
Given the chance, i would leave this institution in a flash. However, they have managed to attract people that i like and until they all leave, i will stay here.

The campus is planted with many large trees which are nice to look at, and the people at Cornell are friendly for the most part. These are the few good qualities that Cornell has to offer to it's students. The food service at Cornell is atrocious, and it is inexcusable for any higher educational institution to provide their students with such horrendous meal options. The school is run by an arrogant administration who do not seem to care in the slightest for the well being of the college's students. Students at Cornell often feel secluded, and many refer to it as a "boarding school" seeing as the neighboring town is still living 50 years in the past. Aside from the occasional visiting professors, the full time professors at Cornell are average. The academics at Cornell are mediocre at best, and the One-Course-at-a-Time system puts stress on many students who are taking difficult courses such as microeconomics, given the short class length of under a month. Cornell's campus safety officers are similar to your typical mall rent-a-cops who take their otherwise simple occupation much to seriously. I have gotten several outrageous parking tickets at Cornell: for parking with the front of my car "overlapping" the grass, and for parking in a parking space with my tires touching the lines. The professors at Cornell are very helpful and respectful to their students, whereas the administration seems completely set on maximizing the institutions profits. I do not recommend this school to anyone currently, but I believe that this school does have potential if some SERIOUS changes were to be made, changes that I do do not see happening within the next century. Cornell College is not for everyone. One-Course-at-a-Time can be intense, but it also gives you an opportunity to learn a lot. If you love learning, you will probably love OCAAT.

The food sucks. But contrary to other reviews the social scene does not. This is not a party school, but who said that means we don't have fun? The school really tries hard to give us things to do. There are a lot of clubs, too. Cedar Rapids is a lot of fun and only 30 minutes away. I think Mt. Vernon is pretty charming on its own, though.

The faculty are ultra-attentive. They will pay so much attention to you. (Before I forget, the campus is pretty by midwestern standards. Lots of tall grass and brick.)

Remember that there are less than 1100 students. The student body is tiny! Everybody knows everybody. It's sort of like high school 2.0 in that way, except not as clique-y. There are cliques though - don't be fooled by the promotional stuff.

Overall, Cornell is a place for people who want to learn a lot and have some good clean fun with good-hearted people. The people can be close-minded, but they do so without realizing it. 8.7 out of 10.
