At the same time, 45% of the student population is from the Chicago land area...I don't know what part of town you hang out in, but you'll definitely see other people than "toothless hillbillies." Their core curriculum is a joke though, but my major (advertising) is challenging for me. If you want to hate your college, you're going to...get involved! This is no small feat. SIUC then failed to send my transcripts from my freshman year to the Naval Academy and my application was summarily denied due only to this neglect. This ruined my chosen career path of Marine Aviation Officer and Astronaut. Never trust SIUC to fulfull their obligations or treat you with respect. I started off in siu's engineering program and ended with a degree in biological sciences. I also was a resident assistant for 2 years. I know all sides of carbondale (sadly its not hard). Basically the run down of the school, in my experience, is; for the most part everyone (perhaps 90%) go out drinking at least four days a week, there is an overabundance of rednecks (the bad kind, racist, homophobic, egotistical type), once the glamor of drinking rubs off there is little activities to do ( small mall with 2 decent stores, lots of hiking, two small theaters), and though the campus on the outside is beautiful the buildings are a mess. From a distance the buildings look nice, but when its cold out the buildings are sweatboxes, when it is warm out they are too cold... On my way into classes there are buckets in the hallways to catch water drops, even when it is not raining... Keep track of your courses, I ended up doing an extra year due to terrible counselors and I hear that happens a lot. Financial aid office... well if you need help and are really confused, dont go in... google for advice, those people just tell you to go to the website "help link" after waiting in line for 20 mins. After the fourth time going there to ask advice, or for a walk through on their confusing website, I decided that if i were ever to go in that office again, it would be with the detonator in my hand and Ola's praises on my tongue... Oh! the best story I can share of my experience is the simple fact that every time i run outside on the sidewalk, someone in a pickup truck yells "FAG" at me. Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Did i mention the girl to guy ratio is around 3:7? Though I hated my experience and going to this school would be the one thing I would go back and change if i could... Like all universities, it is what you make it. If you find a good close group of friends early, it makes life easier. but seriously... make this your last resort. Almost all of the negative reviews on this page were written by people who ranked themselves as quite bright, and most of the positive reviews were written by people who ranked themselves either average or bright (I consider myself to be quite bright and am writing a positive review). I noticed no difference in writing capability or insight in the neg/qb reviews with the positive/a-b reviews. Now, I was not a psych major; I was a film major - but this leads me to the conclusion that perhaps the negative reviewers simply aren’t happy with much in life. I realize this is a pretty big leap, but most of the negative reviews seemed to be egocentric in nature and drenched with a sense of entitlement. I am and always will be a firm believer in the idea that a critic is the easiest thing in the world to be. That being said, it is important to note that I was in the comm. Department at SIUC. It is one of the more renowned colleges at the university and I don’t have much experience in anything else SIU offered except for a couple of their other renowned programs like creative writing and philosophy. I also have to address SIUC’s low standards and so called “morons” being admitted. This is tricky because they need to accept most people for revenue’s sake; however, they truly believe that everyone deserves an education – which is more than I can say for most schools I’ve attended. They are one of the few schools that I know of that takes affirmative action seriously; and for that reason, yes, there are many students from the Southside of Chicago or East St. Louis. Some don’t make it, and others have great success. But at any rate, learning to get along with others that are different than you is a far greater education than you will find in any classroom. This is also important because most schools (aka Uof I, UIC, etc.) recruit the best students out of the Middle East and Asia in order to keep their stats high, therefore keeping their research funding high, therefore keeping their admissions selective, and therefore breeding exclusivity – the antithesis of affirmative action. Remember, statistics are malleable, very often manipulated, and college rankings are very subjective. I believe Mark Twain said something like: there are three types of lies…lies, white lies, and statistics.
I would recommend this school to any student in the world. If you don’t like it you can transfer, and I promise it won’t be the end of the world. I, myself, have attended 4 different universities and plan on returning to SIUC. I believe this school is less like a business than most that I’ve attended, and I think they believe in the power of education instead of career training. Carbondale is in the middle of nowhere and therefore has become an intellectual oasis and a magnet for bright and creative minds. This school is sorely underrated and highly criticized by people who haven’t been properly fact checked; but the best part is, SIU doesn’t care. They are still the second largest school in Illinois and have functioned beautifully for over century. I have faith that things will continue to run smoothly and SIUC will continue to attract and nurture that special type of mind that is proud to be called a Saluki. But don’t take my word for it, nothing is for everyone. Just remember there is only one school that can proudly claim “Shaft” as an alumnus. This is that one school, and he is still a Bad Mother (shut your mouth).
Much love,
Cory Fehrenbacher
