I really enjoyed attending an all women's school. The best part was that all of my instructors were real professors, the majority of htem held PHDs. Not once did I ever had a TA. SMC was a great choice for me, because although I learned enough in class, it was what I learned outside of class that made me who I am today, and I don't think I would have gone down that path had it not been for the college. Learning about different people, you can do that at any university, but attending an all women's catholic college, when you're not catholic, you see and meet all different walks of life, literally. Is the campus safe? No. What campus is? You have creeps walking around in every city. At Saint Mary's, you have rich creeps who live across the street. It's 2007, you can't walk alone as a woman. That's why you call Security to escort you. Welcome to the real world. While I did have some great professors and awesome classes, the negatives far outweighed these positives. First off - this is not a place that welcomes individuality or expression. If you aren't from an upper-class financial background, aren't white and aren't completely concerned with what to wear to the next frat party at Notre Dame - you may experience some problems. For example, when I was there a huge controversy took place over holding a play of the Vagina Monologues. It was banned, as the University decided that it would only promote masturbation and lesbianism. I'd also heard that if any girl went to the nurse to ask about condoms or birth control that they would be denied and that their parents would be called. But one of the biggest issues is the fact that St. Mary's only cares about preserving its supposed reputation. I can not count the number of mass e-mails I received from students who had been sexually or violently assaulted (many times by Notre Dame boys) who were attempting to make the existence of this issue known. In all cases, especially if Notre Dame students had been involved, St. Mary's only response was to shove these incidents under the rug. I'm sure there were many more incidents that St. Mary's had succeeded in covering up and that no one ever heard about. St. Mary's primary concern is to maintain a pristine image in order to make more money and the welfare of their students ranks far behind it. Unless you are very Catholic, very rich, very conservative, and only interested in St. Mary's because its across the street from Notre Dame, I would suggest thinking twice before going here. Having come from an all women's college, it was easy to get accustomed to the classroom setting here. I love the fact that ND is right across the street...there's a lot more going on there because of its size. SMC has lectures/movies/etc too, but it's just on a smaller scale. It's nice to have access to a large research university, while living on a small campus. You get the best of both worlds. I really like the community feel of campus; you feel comfortable here. Classwork isn't that hard for me, but I've been doing very challenging work for several years now, so maybe I'm justless intimidated. The social work deparment here is AMAZING!! Seriously check it out. Dr. K is one of the nicest people you will ever meet. Being in an all-women's environment takes a bit of getting used to. In fact, I am not sure that I truly appreciated it until my senior year. Since graduation I have been impressed with the community outside of Notre Dame, Indiana. My first job was found through an alum that I didn't even know. She took me under her wing and helped me get my first job. In interviews, I am always asked about SMC and interviewers always comment on how impressive they think the degree is. Outside of the image that the degree itself provides, I am more than happy about the way that the school has given me the foundation for a successful life in the workplace. I find myself knowing things and knowing how to do things that my co-workers do not know. I am confident about speaking up in meetings where I am the only woman surrounded by male VPs- this gains me respect. There are many other things I am grateful, including my regained spirituality and compassion for people arround me. I never would have thought that I would have such a positive stance on SMC, especially after my first year, but it really is a good school, and like anything, it is what you make of it. The only negative that I would share is that the surrounding city doesn't have much to offer in terms of a social life, and in order to meet guys, you have to make an effort which can sometimes look like you are being forward (ie it is misread as chasing guys). Other than that, this is a great place to be. Sat, 07 Feb 2004 06:37:34 GMT http://www.studentsreview.com/IN/SMC_comments.html
