A good majority of their parents went to Tufts when Tufts was considered a working class school. It has changed to a "Harvard wannabe" but it will never be a Harvard or an MIT. I expected more diversity. The city of Somerville is awesome. I'm seriously thinking of transferring. As an International Relations major, I have had access to incredible professors and classes. It has also been a huge advantage being able to collaborate with and learn from graduate students at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, one of Tufts' graduate schools right on campus and one of the most prestigious International Affairs schools in the world. There are so many student groups, international students, and events to do around campus and Boston that you will be constantly educationally stimulated and at the same time be able to enjoy yourself and friends. Tufts is challenging, but generally not overwhelming. Unlike other competitive colleges, students aren't competing against other students and learn to balance work and play. The campus is not a safe place for people who are hurt by other students - whether it is rape, domestic violence, intimidation, threats, etc.

There is a terrible lack of diversity and self segregation. most students come from very comfortable backgrounds.

The teachers and administration is out of touch with the plight of the average, non-rich student. They will heartlessly ignore your struggles while they bend over backwards to accommodate the rich students who is struggling with their grades.

Save yourself the trouble. Boston is terrible and it's that close to visit anyway. the campus is ugly and the facilities aren't that nice at all; most of the dorms are a joke. Just...save yourself the money and mental anguish of going to such a sham of a school. All the good professors leave to go teach at Harvard or MIT for a reason...Tufts is sh(t and getting sh*ttier by the year.

All the professors in my department knew my name, and their doors were always open. I had any opportunity I wanted to start a project or work on an extracurricular. Every student I knew was busy all the time because they filled all their free time with an extracurricular or project. I believe I got a quality education, and that I owe much of my post-graduation success to my time there.

The thing is, to enjoy this school you need to have an incredible level of self-motivation. There are hundreds of opportunities, and you can even create any opportunity you'd like, but nobody will hand you an instruction guide telling you how to take advantage of what the school offers. Most social circles develop out of student groups, so those students who were either more reserved, spent more time working on things off-campus, or didn't get involved with things outside of classes felt disappointed.

Finally, some departments definitely foster better relationships with students than others. The most complaints I head came from engineers... but even then, I had engineering friends who loved it and did really incredible things there.
