Having performed well academically in high school, I wanted a school that would facilitate scholarship and academic growth. UMass Boston was not my first choice when selecting a university. I applied and was accepted into Northeastern University, Boston University, MCPHS, and Stonehill College. I had originally chosen UMass because it is in the city and offers relatively inexpensive tuition and fees. However, after being at UMB for two years I can honestly say he school has a lot more to offer than just a low price tag.

The faculty as UMB is incredible. Many of my professors truly encourage their students to investigate and explore for themselves. I was invited into research labs on campus in my first year because many of the instructors want to nurture and guide your personal acquiescence of knowledge. Many of my instructors teach at Harvard, MIT, Northeastern and Tufts. Yes, there are going to be exceptions, but I challenge those naysayers to find any higher education institution without a poor quality professor. In general, I can truthfully say I?ve enjoyed all of the professors I?ve had thus far.

Another factor I consider to be one of UMass Boston?s strengths are the students and opportunities on campus. I am a member of the Honors Program, which offers individualized advising and a special intensive curriculum. Along with the Honors program there are many student clubs and organizations on campus: Model United Nations, Habitat for Humanity, LGBT, Christian club and many more. All of the clubs and organizations include passionate students within a fostering environment.

UMass Boston is growing rapidly. With around 16,000 students this 2012 academic year, the school is implementing its strategic plan which includes the building of a state-of-the-art science complex, new academic buildings, roadways, and dormitories. UMass Boston is an excellent school with incredible people and I hope you include it as a strong candidate in your college search/choice.

The school prides itself on being the city's only public four year university. It's a very down-to-earth, working-class kind of school. With that said, many of the students are hard-working individuals who are determined to get their respective degrees. UMB has far fewer snobby, trust-fund rich kids that generally make up Boston's college student population. The courses are nevertheless challenging and one should not expect an easy ride here. The Campus Center is really nice being that it was opened few years ago, but the school is COMPLETELY crowded. Since I started 3 years ago, every year they keep accepting another 1500+ students, but no new classroom are created... the cafeteria is extremely crowded most of the times, the library? even worse it's a hassle to find a place to study specially for people like me who can't study at home... It's harder to make friends because most students go to classes, finish and go home. Also, the school is really safe, I've been there for 3 years and only saw a small fight once in Freshmen year and that was about it in term of crime or public safety.

A cool thing though is that it's really diverse, and the professors really care about your grade, at least most of them, most will give you second chance, or chances to improve your grade if your not doing well. The classes are NO JOKE, just because UMass Boston is not Harvard or ... MIT ect.. Don't expect any easy ride especially for Sciences, those classes are though.

Lastly, the "One Stop Service" is there to help if ANYTHING you need help with, financial aid, questions, classes, letter from school ect... it's where you go if you have any issue or problem and it's designed to be really convenient, but those staff are completely ARROGANT, NON-HELPFUL, RUDE AND MEAN. There's about 7 staff working in one stop and out of them only one is nice which is the guy, all those ladies, (I'm not trying to be sexist) are completely assholes, when you go up to them for your issue, they don't say hi or welcome you in, even if you say hi, they always seem angry or upset or unwilling to help you, with the attitude of "you can just do that yourself through WISER", but their job is to help you, not tell you to go do it yourself.

This is college so nobody is going to hold your hand--you're expected to work your program as an intellectual adult. The immense diversity in classes and cultural backgrounds is a particular feature extremely appealing to me! Students from every corner of the world with various economic status go to this school (very good looking too ;-).

The city of Boston is amazingly entertaining housing any entertainment you'd like: Italian, Irish, Hispanic, China town, American entertainment and hospitality districts for anyone in the world. The weather varies allowing a broad life in fashion and activities not possible in places like Florida and California.

The Professors are motivated, friendly and outgoing; most if not all have super-exceeded in their own education and are engaged in very high level of other activities in society. The infrastructure is fair (the main building is admirable) and there is a major renovation project under way which will make any one associated with this university proud. Water view and planes constantly fly above you.

In conclusion: Beautiful people from every corner of the world; great education; amazing city; great weather; a great school!
