Any school is what you make it but UMB has everything for you to make it great. It’s a moderately sized state school but the professors are accessible and friendly. Also, there are plenty of opportunities on campus, such as athletics (both for spectators and participants), student organizations like student government and many others. Plus, Boston is your playground. Just hop on the T and explore the city.

There are no dorms at UMB. Even though this is not a secret some kids seem to be surprised when they get here. You have to find your own place which really disperses the student body. Most of the complaints about the university come from kids who came here for a semester and transferred out because UMB is not a traditional college and they felt that their social life was suffering because of the lack of dorms. In response to this I urge people to give it time. Not having dorms means that you don’t meet as many people as quickly as you would at say UMass Amherst but you will meet a lot of people through classes. Once you do the campus that was full of strangers becomes much more friendly and enjoyable.

UMB is a great school where you have a beautiful campus view, accessible friendly professors and hard working students who appreciate that there are many ways to be educated and that everyone brings something to the table.

I am local, from Arlington, and could not afford to leave. At first I was upset I couldn’t go off and get away but now I am thrilled that I stuck around. I would not park on campus even though I have here and there (if you wake up late it will cost you six bucks to park). The campus is super accessible via public transportation and the shuttle bus runs constantly (you never wait more than five minutes and about 90% of the time it’s at the stop waiting to fill up). The faculty is super accessible each faculty posts their office hours but I have met with multiple professors outside of their office hours for clarification on classroom material. People say the buildings are falling apart I see no sign of that. I could see if people thought they were ugly but they are certainly not falling apart (the campus is simply a fortress). I also saw that someone thought the maintenance crew was poor I don’t think this could be further from the truth. The buildings are immaculate especially the most important parts like the bathrooms.

Each student who attends UMass Boston wants to be their, they are paying for their education and they are dedicated to school 100%. That being said the social scene is stunted due to the fact that it’s a commuter school. The students are friendly and I have met a lot of nice people but I do rely on friends that I have known outside of school for most of my social connections. But UMass Boston is in Boston so it’s always fun to go down town and explore or meet up with students from other Boston area schools a lot of my friends go to schools like tufts, northeastern, Bentley and BU also its easy to hope on the commuter rail from south station to visit friends at Bridgewater or Providence.

Each day I wake up and am happy to go to school. I feel like UMass Boston, with challenging academics, great professors, and an accessible and beautiful campus is a hidden gem among all of the expensive private schools in Boston.

Now I am 28 studying at umass and could not be happier. You do not go here to party, you go here to learn. Everyone is there because they want to be. Professors are super helpful. Once you get through the required classes, you are golden. I have had 3 classes with under 10 students in them. Good luck finding that at BU. Go there because you are ready and willing to learn, not for the traditional college experience of drinking kegs in a dorm room. go to bu for that. Go there to study and you can't go wrong. And the campus is on the beautiful harbor. A 5 minute drive to downtown. its hard to go wrong, just know that this is not a traditional college. The Campus Administration is nothing short of awful.
Since I started going parking has gone from bad to worse. They've literally just closed a couple of parking garages just giving up on repairs stating they were too costly to do. Instead they've jacked up parking rates, closed down other parking and made you park further away. Faculty tends to be snobby and annoyed by questions though not all of them. I'd have to be particular about them, but it's quite hit or miss. I've had very good professors and some of the worst in my entire academic pursuits here. Many of them just walk in with a laptop and powerpoint you to death, asking redundant questions just to feebly attempt to keep you awake, most of the time getting futile results. Typically professors tend to be alright to approach with questions and help, it's more the administrators who are awful.
God help you if you want to get into a course and you don't have some unrelated yet required prerequisite. It's almost as if the order of courses is chosen at random since nothing is all that sequential except for math courses. Nothing about the curriculum ties into the next. The campus itself is hideous. Crumbling cracked concrete everywhere. The new Campus Center is nice, and the catwalks between buildings are appreciated since the wind coming in off of the ocean during colder months will cut right through you regardless of how bundled you are. It's a good thing they have these catwalks too since the maintenance crew does some of the worst sanding and snow removal jobs I've seen. If they were property maintenance for a living area they'd be sued in a heartbeat.
Administors working on setting up schedules are callous and either meet you with disgruntled attitudes, as if they're too busy for you, even if you are a paying customer....or...they look at you like a deer in headlights and pass the buck onto someone else...be careful to differentiate between administrators and the advisors. My class advisors have been particularly helpful..especially John Applebee who seems to be the only person on the entire campus who isn't an absolute dunce when it comes to accomplishing real work. It's sort of the attitude of "just pass him along until he gives up" type deal. Transferring in of credits was mediocre...some did, some didn't...no out of average dealing there. I've never been much for college sports, which is good since Umass Boston doesn't really make any headlines for any of their sports programs...it's a commuter school..so I expected this. Most of the students are your typical "bleeding heart" liberal types who want to save the world and let all illegal aliens come in and live here for free on our money, so if you're of the conservative nature...you're in for a battle. The population of the campus is decidedly majority minority, but there is no single group that seems to dominate or make things uncomfortable.
