The following information is strictly for those to not become shocked like I was to the point of leaving this university immediately. I came back to school at 22 years of age from Santa Monica College in California, all UCs accept courses from this college. UMD did not accept many of my core courses such as English and other communication courses. If UCLA accepts my courses why not UMD? So yes, it felt like a scam to have to re-do these basic courses. But the number one factor that drew the line for me was the fact that many professors utilized Teacher Assistants to lecture, give assignments, and grade. You would see your professor about once/twice a week or so, and were obligated to sit in a lecture with a TA at least twice a week. In my personal experience, the TAs I had were incapable of this role. As a paying customer, 10k per semester with an education of this quality is absolutely not worth it, this is my opinion. I felt that my needs were absolutely ignored. Throughout my time here I put up with violence from a handful of Caucasian students. Threats, stalking, harassment regardless of time or day. I went into the Maryland food coop and dealt with harassment from two males and a group of females that whispered to them ?not to do it?. This took place in 2019!! Violence like this is common here and nothing is done to stop it. Everything gets covered up. I will never donate money to this school. If you are a first-generation college student however, attending this University will be a great challenge... although that can be said about attending any college. However, this University especially is a machine, large and ruthless. You need to advocate for yourself at all times on this campus. Administration, departments and within the University can get pretty scattered and disorganized; communication between them is completely your own responsibility as well as knowing the policies of the individual departments or programs which may conflict but they will not tell you. Actively advocating for yourself in every step is essential in order to progress at this University. Fri, 17 Jun 2016 03:14:09 GMT StudentsReview 639-173979 639-173979 639 11 Computer Engineering Male Undergraduate Class 2019 1st Year Neutral Overall, UMD is a large, above average (academically) public research university. That being said, it's easy to get swallowed up in the sea of students. In order to make friends, you have to join some kind of group because everyone is pretty cliquey. It's not too hard to though unless you're really anti-social because there are tons of clubs and greek life is prevalent. I didn't go in expecting much in terms of social life because I'm majoring in computer engineering and a lot of the students are the typical introverted geeks you'd expect them to be. The athletic programs are great here though and it's fun to go to all of the games, football, basketball, lacrosse, etc. With computer engineering, you'll get a TA that doesn't speak English well about 1/4th of the time but the professors all know what they are talking about and for the most part teach well (there's always a few bad ones no matter where you go). The TA's and professors try their best to help out the students, especially if you personally ask. I don't regret coming here because it's cheap for me (in-state, presidential scholarship) and I'm learning a lot academically. The social life was never a huge part to me because I still have made a few good friends and don't go to lots of parties anyways. I would recommend anyone considering UMD to give it a good chance and possibly visit as any kind of person could succeed and have a good time here.
