The main gate for safety got broken through, bolt cutters and ppl started getting onto university through the back area by cutting the fence line randomly.
Gangs on campus.
Avid use of drugs.
Police force does a lot of work, but its mostly criminals that don't even go to the school.
"Pro Ratings" for meals mean you get charged 30x the normal rate even in state.
Buy books in cash, don't show your student ID and get the shelf price.
The people are decent, but the drug use is rampant there.
Dorms get broken into regularly from people outside of the community.
Don't bring anything valuable if you live on campus. [don't do it]
Go to succeed, and move on.
Administration loathes you if you're not part of the campus strategic demographics.
Get ready to work hard and be hated for being better. Living here on campus is not horrible, but it's not great either (I would say for the average student). There's a large party crowd here, so that might be nice for some, but it brings unnecessary problems (e.g. fighting, pregnancies, theft). Truthfully, that's inherent to most colleges out there. I suppose you could say that there is heavy drug use as well. Anyways, advising is trash. Academics are what you make it. Most students get stuck into remedial math (Math 101), so take your placement test serious. I got lucky enough to have enthusiastic, likable teachers for my general studies, and my engineering teachers have been decent. If you work hard to have a complete understanding of your studies then it will pay off. Good luck if you choose to come here as well. One of the best parts about UMES is the diversity. We have a copious amount of students from all over. Everyone is open to the cultures that they encounter and everyone is approachable.

I am a Marketing major at this university. The Business Department is great at preparing me for the "real world." The department strives on making sure everyone is successful. Every professors that I had does not set you up for failure. They are determine to make you learn and apply yourself when faced with challenges. It is important to keep in mind that you are in charge of your own success. Like many other Universities, you are not going to like all your professors or the work given. However, if you apply yourself, work hard, and ask questions; you will exceed.

There are numerous organizations that you can take part of at this campus. I personally think we have different organizations that cater to everyone's interest.
