Where do I even begin? The professors are OK (at least they seem to have improved due to comments made at the end of the previous semester). However, the tests are multiple choice, which can be catastrophic (math problems in a multiple choice exam are ridiculous; and the multiple choice is worth far more than the open ended problems- which are obviously a better test of intelligence). The labs for gen chem are ATROCIOUS. I mean they are actually sickening. They are poorly written, not just typos but also sentences that just don't make sense. The calculations on these labs are ridiculous; they take HOURS to even figure out. The labs provide misleading examples for the calculations. You better hope for a damn good TA who will help you a lot, or you'll spend 10 hours doing a 4 page lab report. The lab reports are structured like you're in middle school. They aren't similar to reports/articles in scientific journals. If you're planning on being a science major, try to take an AP Chem class or something similar, so you can test out of UMaine's gen chem. It will be a terrible and stressful experience if you have to take it. I cannot stress this enough: the labs are so horrible. These people can't even write proper sentences. You will be confused. I'm just posting this because people need to be warned. This is probably the worst part on the University other than the excessive party scene. The school Is a fun school you can go to parties everynight you can hang out with friends everynight go to football games hockey games or frats it's what u make of it! But now there are some people that go here that idk why they go here because they hate people and don't meet people it's collee you have to try to meet people don't sit in your dorm all day. Another down fall of this school is the admissions office I had to go through sooo much to get into this school and people who went to my school that did worse then me got in know problem I was so mad to say the least. But the school is a very nice school the frats are very nice looking houses I would love to join one. The sports team players are very friendly and don't act snobby. The weight room is excellent also. People usually meet at Parties so i suggest going to a couple there fun and exciting but warning if the cops show up leave!!!! Do what the cop says If Your unde 21 drinking dont fall for the " hide in the house somewhere" NO do not do that leave with everyone else the cops just want the party to be over they arnt looking to arrest peope inless it is needed and also the frats are very controlled parties if u have drank and can't drive they have sober brothers to drive u home they r great people but u she to think its THERE house don't get mad if they won't let u in its there home. UMO is a great college. Personally, I would never want to go back to my home state because I loved it here.
Not all colleges are perfect, so don't be thinking with huge amounts of expectations with every college you look at. I can understand though since college is so expensive. UMO is very expensive for an out of stater. I know I am very worried about my future loans and the expenses I have to make. I sort of wished I checked out more colleges in my home state so I could have the opportunity to save money. So if you are looking here out of state, please consider your home state schools first, especially if it has your major. Despite the expenses here at UMO, it is still an amazing school and I never want to think about transferring.
Bio majors, listen up. If you can survive BIO 100 and 200 for your first year, you are pretty much set to go. Both are very challenging classes, I spent a crazy amount of my day studying for those classes and it is not an easy grade type of class. Other than that, the Bio department is very nice and they're pretty laid back. There's different Biology type clubs to join if you like to extend more knowledge.
There are parties all the time, but its very rare that the partying atmosphere will annoy you. Most of the time people leave the dorms to go somewhere else to party (safer that way anyways) so if you don't want to deal with the "noise", it probably wont happen often. If you love to party, you'll have fun at the frats and get togethers at OT.
Overall advice: think about your money before applying and study well. Have fun!

After spending my freshman year at BMC, I realized that a liberal arts school could not give me the field experience and specified major that I wanted. I transferred to UMaine in the summer of 2011, and I am very happy with my choice. I am now a Wildlife Ecology major with a minor in Psychology and in Zoology. I was in the Honors College for about 2 weeks, but I dropped out because I found the students and faculty to be arrogant and condescending. The Wildlife Ecology department here is excellent: the labs are fun but challenging, and you learn to write really good lab reports. Unlike at a liberal arts college, you learn actual skills instead of wasting away in the classroom. The professors are all very knowledgeable and approachable. There are many things to do on campus, whether you like parties, movie nights, clubs, etc. I am part of the student chapter of the Wildlife Society, but there are clubs for every major and every interest. UMaine has several fraternities and sororities, and most parties are held in the frat houses: I personally have never gone to one, but I've heard they're fun. We also have a club called Curva right next to campus that accepts all ages. I live off-campus in a nearby town, and apartments and rental houses are really affordable in the area. The food on campus tastes good, and there's a relatively good assortment of vegetarian options. If you're vegan or gluten-free, there really are not many options in the dining halls, but there is a nearby grocery store called Hannaford. The dorms are well-designed, but the walls are very thin: If you're a quiet person like me you'll probably want to move off campus as soon as possible, as dorm living at any school is quite chaotic. If you like partying though, then you shouldn't have a problem. This is a great school if you like the outdoors and don't mind the cold: I'm from Virginia, and so far I've survived the winter! We are right next to Bangor International Airport and not too far from Bar Harbor, Portland, and Freeport. There are very few professors in the department that truly care, and the nursing program is constantly trying to weed out the weak instead of helping you succeed. I am doing well at the school, this isn't a letter because I am failing and mad, I simply wish I had chosen to attend a Nursing School that cared about it's students. If you get a 74.9 in a class, don't expect it to be bumped up to a 75, it will stay a C- and you will have to retake the class.
