Fayetteville is a very beautiful, safe, fun place to be. Dickson Street is just enough for a college student to have plenty of places to go, but not so big to be dangerous. Its like a little slice of a big city, tucked into the foothills of the Ozarks. The biking/hiking trails within the city are a great amnenity as well. And just outside the city are several parks and national forests with outstanding recreation opportunities.

The Sam Walton College of business is an extremely well funded business school. The faculty and staff tend to be influenced by Wal-Mart a lot, but I think that in most other business schools, Wal-Mart would be a frequently referenced example from the business world.

Many speakers were directly related to Wal-Mart, and one of my teachers was the head of purchasing for Wal-Mart Latin America who was pursuing her PhD. The exposure to this kind of real world experience was excellent and I think the business school is underrated nationally. Its excellent.

In my career, the Walton name was easily recognized and I can honestly say I feel like it opened doors that otherwise may have stayed closed to me. I have never felt like my studies there left me unprepared. If anything, I feel like I knew more coming out of school than my employers expected of me.

The campus is nice, but its hilly. Be prepared to get whipped into shape. The student body was friendly and diverse. Fayetteville is small, but big enough that everyone has a place to fit in. There are hippie hangouts, gay hangouts, intellectual hangouts, biker hangouts, a thriving greek scene, and a vibrant local arts/music scene. For a relatively small school in a relatively small city, the University of Arkansas exposed me to a huge amount of diversity, and not just racial diversity. Diversity of thought, opinion, lifestyle, politics...you name it, U of A had it.

The SEC sports atmosphere was fantastic. There was always something going on in Fayetteville, and I'm proud to be a Razorback! Its like nothing else!

Fayetteville is a one of a kind place and I wouldn't trade my time there for anything.

Mine is as follows, the UofA as a school in the SEC has about half the students as the other SEC schools and because of the Wal-Mart family about twice the endowment. This makes it a very decent public school, which is a tier #1 ranked #125 by U.S. News and still continously improving.

Of course school isn't just all about academics, a big part of which is social life and also the vibe and school spirit. The school is very well organized and there is a football team, albeit beautiful stadium but not too good of a team. Fayetteville although has grown rapidly isn't exactly a city, so the there is a small-town feel. It is very safe and people are for the most part either very friendly and hospitable or timid and keep to themselves. There is definetly a hippie and yuppie vibe to be felt in the town, at the same time there is a Missouri/Oklahoma confluence in the region. It is hard to pinpoint, rather a unique place is what it is. The main difference I would say in comparison to the other SEC schools is that UofA really lacks in diversity. Diversity in colors may be one thing, but it seems as if many of the student body comes from the same high school, even if they are all the way from Dallas, TX many of them even knew each other before coming to campus. And although Fayetteville may be very progressive for Arkansas and a fast-growing region, with many transplants from Texas and even California, it still does hold a small town mentality, in short if you ever try and tell people about your travels to Darfur and East Timor to save the world, some may look at you and say huh?

Although Dickson st. is where it's at and right next to campus. It's only about 3 blocks long really and due to the policy of gentrification, it's as a friend who grew up in Fayetteville once said, it now looks like an episode of Sex and the City gone bad. Outside of Fayetteville, there's a lot to do outdoors wise, the Ozarks are splendid, but if you come here be prepared to drive on the holidays as there isn't really a city nearby. In sum I would say it's good school, great place to study. If you can get into a better SEC school I would suggest it, but if this is close to home, you might fit right in.

Sam Walton College of Business and the College of Engineering are two of the best colleges you can find; I can't speak for the other colleges since I have no experience with them. Faculty are helpful and resources to help you succeed are also very easily found. There are tons of parties and things to do all the time, whether you drink or not there is still plenty of opportunities to have a great time. I lived on campus my first year and off the past two years. Dorms are dirty; however, they just completed new dorms and are renovating or tearing down many of the older ones. No matter what you hear, plenty of greeks hang out with non-greeks. Living in a dorm your first year you meet many people who will be your friends forever that may or may not pledge to a fraternity or sorority. I am in a fraternity and live with two guys who are not in my fraternity, they like it because I can get them into parties. Some people say there are too many rich "snobs" here, well go to any major D1 university and there are going to be people who are there just because their parents are rich; the UofA offers many scholarship to out of state and in state student so many people who don't have rich parents are here too. North West Arkansas is a great place to be right now, the area is growing and it is very appealing. I have been to other universities and have not found as good an atmosphere as the UofA has, I highly recommend this school. Get involved in student groups and intermurals and you will have a great time while getting a very competitive education. I'll admit that it is working hard to make the campus more diverse. But I will also admit that there is a very clear separation between social classes, economic classes, and different races. Greeks date greeks, greek girls date athletes, nongreeks don't interact with greeks that much, and you'll definitely meet alot of rich people who have never had a hard day in their life because daddy's paycheck always kept them smiling. The racial separation is unbelievable. Some white girls will chase black athletes (DMAC good example) but other that it's racially divided. African-Americans separate themselves with their own events, parties, etc. Asians truly are divided even all chosing to stay in same off-campus apartments, Mexicans and Bolivians are the same as well. the U of A is becoming is becoming more diverse in every way but you still have your country racists who come in from small towns around Fayetteville as well as some racists professors as well. But all in all Fayetteville is okay. There are a billions things to do on campus but still lacking alittle off-campus other than dickson. Whatever your interest you definitely be able to find student groups or other students who have same interest due to size of the unversity. Not too big where you walk around and never see anyone you don't know but you always see alot of people you've never met everyday. I'm a honors business student and it is very competitive from internships, classes, etc. My friends from arch. school complain all the time about disparities between colley. If you come to b-school don't depend too much on career center to get hired. Real good if you looking for accounting and marketing, not much else. A lot of parties and A lot of drinking. Drinking has become way of life for students at U of A. Don't expect any help from university after freshmen year concerning housing, classes to take, etc. After freshmen year they expect you know everything about the university. Parking will eat you alive. DO NOT NEVER TRY TO BEAT PARKING, YOU WILL LOSE. They give out tickets like handshakes and I've seen students' cars getting towed 2 or 3 times a week. Off-campus is cheaper but almost not worth it dealing with parking and inconvenience. Good student support services and academic support as well. Good scholarships, especially if you're smart and in business. We me mentioning all the good stuff about U of A you are probably wondering why the comment is not positive. At U of A you will have to deal with some of the most fake, stuck-up, people you have ever met. I've met people who openly brag about how much money their parents have in front of people who are not so financially blessed. Once you become indepedent, get your morals and beliefs right(there are a lot of people at U of A through vain philosophy arguing that any type of lifestyle, drugs, and practices are okay and you should try it out while totally disregarding morals and consequences). If you are Christian or another religion please strenghthen yourself before you come here. I've seen alot of students pay huge consequences for following the crowd or doing things without any guidance. Be strong. Well once you get pass people attitudes, and solidfy your morals, and find REAL FRIENDS, you'll have a good time and learn alot. Don't stay there, alot of people do because of friends but alot of other states with better cities(Texas). Wed, 06 Aug 2008 04:12:13 GMT http://www.studentsreview.com/AR/UAF_comments.html
