I am a lover of art and quickly enrolled in the University of Minnesota's CLA program. This was after I discovered I did not have the money to attend MCAD.

I quickly realized my mistake.

Their basic drawing classes are populated by arrogant, self absorbed instructors who would rather have their students painting or drawing about suicide and eating disorders then learn something as valuable as foreshortening and balance. So I spent my entire student life pandering to these egotistical ass-hats rather than actually learning anything.

The University of MN is also very lacking in any computer based Art classes. There is a 3D animation class that I attended (assuming they haven't cut the program) and had an awesome time, but that is but one diamond in a huge mountain of ****.

Photoshop is practically unused, and the imacs the University uses are not able to fully handle the weight of the programs they run.

The one thing I discovered that just made me giddy with how badly things are run at the UMN is how they have their colleges separated. You see they decided that if a student wanted to use programs like Indesign, or Photoshop, that they must want to be Design majors, and should enroll at the design college. What makes me so angry about that is that if you are enrolled in the Design college, you can take regular drawing and painting classes from the CLA college, but if you are enrolled in the CLA college, you CAN NOT take classes through the Design college unless you want another 4 year commitment. If you love modern art, and other liberal tripe, then the UMN is perfect for you. If you want to be an actually talented artist and learn skills that will help you make a living doing something you love, then go somewhere else. All I can say is I wish I'd gone to MCAD. I decided to finish my Sociology Minor so I could enter Law Enforcement and the Sociology head, Prof. Uggen, was extremely helpful and understanding in getting me enrolled at a late date. The faculty and staff is very approachable if you make an effort in getting to know them. I strongly encourage anyone interested in CLA to attend the U of M. I got a 3.9 for a year and a half then I said fuck it and smoked a lot of weed and finished college with like a 3.2. If I could go back it would have opened a lot more doors now if I would have kept applying myself. All in all though anything above a 3.0 will get you into grad at a decent school anyways. It turns out personality and networking is often as important as credentials so join clubs and associate yourself with people going places and it will pay dividends in the long run. Example: I am now an Army captain and graduated the top in the last three service academies I attended. Even though I may be one of the more intelligent officers of the bunch, my bosses hate me though because I do not associate myself with military people off work and don't go to unit gatherings and such. If you wanna excel you gotta play the game and that will entail lots and lots of ass kissing and networking. The campus is big and impersonal. I found it hard to keep friends since most likely you'd only ever have a class with someone onces as there are so many students. The benefits are big parties and big social events to take advantage of. If I could do it all over again now that I am paying back student loans I would still have gone to UMN because it is the best school in the state and paying out of state tuition is not smart economics giving the fact that additional education is usually needed for white collar advancement and student loans stack up quickly. I debated transferring out after my first semester, as the city was a big change from the small town I had grown up in, but once you get the hang of everything, it's really a great school.

It's big. Really really huge. Lectures are big at first - my chem lectures are always around 300 people. You get used to it, and the accompanying labs/discussions are always smaller. There are buses to circulate people around campus in the colder months, as well as city buses, so don't worry about getting around campus. And even in this huge campus, I see people I know from class or the dorms all the time walking around. That being said, unless you make an effort to get to know people, you probably won't make tons of friends in classes or elsewhere.

There is literally an endless amount of things to do in the Twin Cities if you look for it. Secretsofthecity.com or vita.mn is a great place to keep up on stuff happening around the cities. Anyone who tells you there isn't anything to do here is LYING! Minneapolis is an amazing city, and it's one of the biggest perks about going to school here.

The bio program is amazing. It's mostly located on the St. Paul campus, which is way smaller than the main Minneapolis campus. I love it, as if feels like a smaller college in the middle of the big 10 school that I love. When I was in the college of liberal arts, my advisers were NO help...AT ALL. But after transferring into the bio program, my advisers have been so nice and helpful, and I really can't say enough. There are tons of research opportunities here, and the biology faculty are engaging and great teachers. (At least all the ones I have had.)
