Because this school didn't meet up to my expectations; I'm transfering to a school in California. It was way to damn easy to get into this school. This curriculum is basic, I don't feel very challenged here. The instructors vary; but most make me want to fall asleep in class and don't ever excite me. I feel that there is a biased conservative-view with most instructors and faculty. As intelligent as the instructors are, I don't feel they make good teachers. As friendly as the students are here; many are closed-minded. The school isn't very aesthetically pleasing. The buildings are constructed in a very bland and uninteresting style. The outside of the library reminds me of an airport terminal. While the Ozark area is very beautiful in the Spring, the college itself is very mundane and ordinary. The residence halls are badly kept; there's cigarette burns on the carpets, water damaged ceilings, leaky sinks, uncomfortable bed, and bad smells. For some reason they randomly turned off the heat in Woods Hall bathroom, and the water is usually cold in the morning.
The Sodexo food used in the dining halls is of poor quality. There is not much taste, and sometimes badly prepared. There is not much selection in food, even though they claim it's "quality food with diverse menus", they have the same things every week. Bad tasting and undercooked. The dining halls at times smell badly with uncleaned food on floors and tables.
The beauty of the MidWest is that you can get away with a lot of things, because there are no heavy restrictions. But because of that, I feel that some students do not take there course work seriously and many slack off and don't show up to class. There is no attendence requirement except to get extra points. There's no competition. I feel you are not very well trained in your particular major (with the exception of some). Most students who graduate don't go beyond Missouri. I feel that is limiting, and that is why I can't stay here. I don't feel like there is an advancement here.

The staff was outstanding and a few of my professors are still there. My junior year, I decided to go to Pratt Institute, a New York City that specializes in Art & Design. The higher quality of the MSU's tools, resource, faculty and administration over Pratt was very noticeable. MSU was safe, socially engaging and 1/20th the cost; far superior to the New York school.

The only thing the big city school had over MSU was its proximity to the city, the number of job opportunities and name recognition.

I’m still not sure that I would have stayed at MSU for my degree but it was definitely a great place to get a well-rounded, high-quality education while paying a low tuition (especially for in-state students). I used it as a jumping off point where I finished my general curriculum credits and moved on to a specialized school.

Okay, with that out of the way, MSU is a great school, but you only get out what you put in. Speaking of the Anthro professors, they are simply wonderful. End of story. They get really involved with their students and even host ethnic dinners and events, which you don't often see until grad school.

MSU is for people who can motivate themselves and want a good education without the paying a fortune. You can get good grades without really applying yourself, but in the end that’s your loss because there are some really wonderful opportunities if you look and apply yourself.

Springfield is a great town, but small. Despite its size, it’s got a good local music scene, lots of bars, and a surprising amount of artists. There are actually several universities in Springfield, so there is a huge population of people 18 to 35. There isn’t a huge Greek population (I think around 13%), but plenty of other great student organizations to join.

There are plenty of good teachers, but you have to sek them out. A lot of the teachers have an incredibly bloated opinion of themselves and have not yet realized that they teach at SMS, not Princeton. The honors program is the only thing that has kept me from transferring to another school. Luckily I'm not paying a cent to go here, so I'm not losing anything to this lovely institution.
