I settled on Mizzou half out of exhaustion, and because I didn't get into my number one school - Georgetown. Also, I was directly admitted in the J school - which if you don't know is the best. Even after a year, I would honestly say the j school lives up to the hype. A lot of requirements are built to weed people out and it works. If you don't really have a passion for journalism, you will find out and want to change majors upon entering lower level pre j classes.

However, the rest of my classes have been a joke-specifically general education requirements. For example, I'm horrible at math but I've been my stat class once this semester show up for the tests and have yet to score below an A on one. Gen Ed classes will be big, but I've found professors are reachable if you make the effort. But you have to make the effort! Overall, I really don't think I'd go to Mizzou if I wasnt in the journalism school.

As far as the student body, you'll find a lot of KC, STL kids looking to enjoy another four year extension of high school. It's what you'd expect from a state school. Random weekends a lot of people will just go home for no reason. But if you are out of state you aren't screwed - you will make friends if you put yourself out there. I made a lot of friends in my residence hall. I also rushed and am in a sorority and I met some friends that way, though I wouldn't recommend the greek system for anybody who is looking to enjoy large amounts of free time-greek life will consume a decent chunk of that. As a chick, you don't need to go greek to party greek but as a guy you do. Frat houses are really stingy about letting any guy who isn't in their house into a party. If you want to party away from greek life, make some friends with older friends from KC and STL, make other friends in general, or befriend the athletes. They throw decent parties. I don't have a fake, btw, and I get along just fine, though I have friends who frequent the bars as freshman.

Also, Mizzou in the SEC now. This DOESNT mean were a sports crazed school-were not. Tailgating is fun, and our basketball arena is sweet but coming from Iowa and living around U of I, I'm telling you - Mizzou is NOT a huge sports school. People could care less about the games half the time. In football, people will leave if were getting beat terrible - like the Alabama game where nobody came back after it was rain delayed. In basketball, if we play anyone were supposed to beat expect a less than full stadium. The only game I attended where I felt real, excited crowd energy was during the Florida game, which was nuts! But in general, there is not some crazy tiger spirit power that connect every single person on campus, no matter how hard anybody wants to act like it.

Personally, this was a big mistake for me. Not being used to not having access to the teacher, MU is horrible. Also, they make some of these classes very difficult to "weed out" people just here to party. Mizzou is a great school but not for people who want a small, intimate class setting. I feel like I am a number not a student. In short, if you want to be able to have access to the professor, don't go to Mizzou, at least not for your first two years. You get real world experience and you truly figure out if this is what you want to do as a career. There is no messing around in the department, so be ready to work once you start working at the Missourian, KOMU or wherever your emphasis area puts you. A LOT of people drop out in the first couple of years which shows that it's not easy, but if you make it through, you feel quite accomplished and you are more than ready to get a good job straight out of college. I have stayed in Columbia to work, but my friends/peers have received jobs in New Orleans, Dallas, Washington, New York, Chicago, Tulsa and more, all straight out of Mizzou. Where else do you see that happening? I am in the science program and majority of your teachers will have TAs that do not speak english that will teach you 1/3-2/3 of the week while your teachers will curb the grades so much because they cannot teach worth a damn and choose to confuse the students instead with bogus test questions that were never talked about in class. One of my teachers wrote the textbook for her class and subtly decided that the test should be about everything but what the textbook covered. So I could not even study for her test without bringing a tape and video recorder to her class. Then my other teacher would make a 60% a B because everyone was flunking the class because he liked to think that by throwing random test questions from page 565 in a subcaption box on the test that he never talked about in class he would be teaching us something. His chem labs were ridiculously long and never satisfactory, with no apparent guidelines. Then my math teacher taught about 1 minute on each topic, and left all the dirty work to my TA who taught us most of the week who could barely speak English.

Most of my TAs spoke broken English and the experience was truly a nightmare. Combine that with campus cops that are always parading around and needlessly harassing people, dorm monitors inspecting your room without warning when you aren't home every week, and the cafeteria food which at first seems great but by week three is absolutely disgusting and cheap...I cannot recommend this place. In fact I think the biblical description of hell is more appealing than returning to this bureaucracy. The office even lost my medical records and is claiming I owe them money and turning me over to the federal government for collections.

This place, with its glorious gym, is nothing more than a 20,000$ a year gym membership and a retirement plan for arrogant teachers that are more concerned with making students feel stupid by expecting them to memorize things in one minute and then throwing random questions on tests.

AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
