The campus is by far the prettiest in North Carolina. It's surrounded by beautiful mountains and the trees in the spring/fall are gorgeous! Everyone here is super friendly and I've made tons of great friends. It's very easy to get involved in clubs and intramurals. The surrounding area is kind of dead, but there is a club called Boneshack, a bowling alley, movie theater,camping, fishing, rock climbing, tubbing, white water rafting, and so much more. If none of those sound interesting, there's always something going on, on campus. If you're bored there's volleyball courts, the Cat's Den (arcade), Racquet ball, a very well equipped brand new gym, huge climbing wall, basketball courts, concerts, movies (on campus movie theater), and plenty of parties to choose from at night. If you aren't enjoying yourself here, it's because you aren't taking advantage of all of the opportunities presented. The professors here are all extremely intelligent, approachable, and typically very understanding. I can't say a single bad thing about my experience. Get involved and work hard and you will love everything about Western. Go Cats! A great way to meet people is to join clubs, sports, etc. A lot of people already know each other. A percentage of the students are still in that high school mindset. You'll find people talking crap, acting like 16 year olds etc. But im sure that is at every school. I love the professors in my department. They are very helpful. The learning and writing center, and the math lab is what I like best. Getting your papers reviewed is an easy way to get a 100! The gym is also nice and very well equipped. However, eating at the dining hall is a hit or miss. Especially around the holidays. Don't come here if you don't have a car to get around in if you don't want to be stuck on campus. All the good food places are in Sylva. If Western was closer to my home, I would stay here. I am transferring out because I don't like the student body and its far from home. People drive crazy here! The police never seem to be around when they should be. A few people have almost been hit (including myself) from inattentive drivers. A lot of people smoke pot and can be rude. Jobs can be scarce. Some of the guys here are creepy and determined to get some panties. Everyone knows everyone, and if you don't belong to a group, or hang out with anyone, people will start to think you are stuck up (just like high school). Overall Western is a nice school. There are multiple incidents regarding the police nightly. Everyone smokes pot on the hallways and unless youre kissing the RA's ass you'll get in trouble. Many people have been raped, including myself. If I had a daughter I wouldnt let her come here. The campus police do a terrible job and charge people for stuff that never happened. I regret going to this school with every piece of me. The liberal studies classes at this school are useless and I havent learned anything since I've been here. I pay over $1,000 for cafeteria food yet its the same bland stuff everyday. Ive lost weight since I came here because I never eat. It's absolutely disgusting.
