Summer Research Program for High School Students

The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHSC-H) offers a summer research program to qualified high school students interested in science and the health professions.  The program is primarily designed for high school juniors and seniors from UTHSC-H partner schools in the Spring Branch, Houston, Fort Bend, and Aldine Independent School Districts.  The program is guided by the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and the National Science Education Standards.  Its primary goals are to introduce the students to the scientific process through laboratory or clinical research, and increase their interest and motivation to pursue careers in the health professions. 

The program will run from June 7 until July 16, 2004 and includes four major components:

1.  Hands-on research with a faculty member where the student is exposed to a variety of methods to face challenges in biomedical research.  As a result of this inquiry-oriented activity, students should develop the ability to:

 Identify questions and concepts that guide the design of scientific projects.

 Use technology and mathematics.

 Formulate hypothesis and revise scientific explanations models using logic and evidence.

 Analyze and critique scientific explanations and models.

 Communicate and defend findings.

 Principles and practices of research

 Laboratory safety

 Study skills

 Basic laboratory techniques
