UVM/UVermont Summer Programs

The University of Vermont's College of Engineering and Mathematics and The Governor’s Institutes of Vermont announce their 2004 UVM/.GIV Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Sciences - Summer Institute to be held June 20-27, 2004. 

The purpose of this Summer Institute is for students to explore career opportunities in aerospace, biomedical, civil, mechanical and electrical engineering as well as the statistics, mathematics, and computer applications.  Tours will include: 1) the IBM facility 2) the Husky Injection Molding Plant, 3) the Burlington Waste Water Facility,4) the Chittenden Materials Facility, 5) the Intervale Compost Facility, 6) the McNeil Plant 7) the Winooski Dam, and 8) the Ben & Jerry’s Homemade plant in Waterbury as well as a trip to the Sandbar Beach are part of this program. 

Students will build robots during the week from Radio Shack cars, towers from hard drives of computers, and old VCR’s.  A ROBOT WAR Competition will be held at University Mall in front of the Sears entrance.  Winners will be announced at the Awards Ceremony.  Other students competitions include: a Poetry Contest, a Technocratic Oath Competition, and a Sand Arch Competition.  Winning poems and oaths will be read by students at the Awards Ceremony.

Students will be housed in campus dorms and will participate in a variety of recreational and leisure activities.  The program will also include presentations by the Dean of the College of Engineering & Mathematics, Dr.  Robert Jenkins, and by faculty and students from the College.  The program features presentations on “Diversity” and “Remediation of Contaminated Groundwater Sites”.  Students gain insight into career opportunities and develop first-hand awareness of the nature of college life.
