I think it is a real shame that we (the students) have to look at the lack of aesthetics on campus. The sheer fact this university doesn't have any benchmarks for any of its departments, administration staff, et al is a sign of misappropriated funds, training, etc.

Some topics I'll be covering with you in the future: 1. Rampant cheating during exams, quizes, hw 2. Lack of command of University Professor's during class time. 3. Financial Aid Department of Hell 4. Computer Science Department "fluff" CS110 (Intro to Java/Unix) 5. Parking Garage Blues…I mean News. 6. End of an era…Theatre Department woes (see below) 7. Administrative Non-Friendly, often hostile environment 8. Cell phone use in the classroom 9. Lack of benchmarks system wide 10. OSHA 11. Lack of cafeteria diversity (think FOOD) Sodexho 12. Senater Scandals 13. Science men's bathroom temptations (activity)

Do we really need a ballroom in the new student union?

I tell you what we really need on campus…a new theatre!! Check out the article, "Last Act for UMB Theatre Department", The Mass Media, February 07, 2002 (front page). Ron Nash, department head for the Theatre Department, has made great strides in his effortless attempts to present new plans for the new theatre in the new student union. "He designed spaces on the theatre floor where light crew would plug in light boards to test lights before hanging them. Nash designed the theatre with 'short money', the university stated budget, in mind. Nash said he literally 'ran into the meeting' of the committee set up to approve of his plan—the Campus Center Advisory Board—and that 'they were very impressed'. About a year and a half later, however, Nash heard 'through the grapevine' that the theatre had been nixed in favor of a ballroom by the powers-that-be, namely then-Chancellor Penney and the Board of Trustees." (Lorna Nogueira—Mass Media Staff)

Mayor Menino himself stated that the biggest industry in Boston is

not sports, not Gillette, not Polaroid, but the [ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY].

I thought for sure when UMB ended its football program more money would be appropriated to other departments in need of money. Not more money for the chancellor and what he/she wants as "toys"; e.g. a ballroom in the new student center.

This is not the end of the story…
