Date: Jun 04 2002 Major: Geography and Geosciences (This Major's Salary over time) We were told that a B.S. in geology was sufficient to qualify us for a career in geology. This was not true. It had not been true for some time. Nor were we really prepared for work at a legitimate graduate school. After graduation we were threatened that "our degrees would be revoked" if we complained about not being able to find work. The faculty "passed the buck" on to us for not going to, or suceeding, in grad school. The geology program at Illinois State was essentially phoney- it existed to provide employment for a small group of "professors" that otherwise would have had to work for a living.I scored extremely high on the standardised tests (PSAT, ACT, GRE), in fact, I later qualified for MENSA. I also went on to earn a technical degree in drafting and mechanical design with high honors. All my geology degree apparently qualified me for was ridicule and low paying menial jobs until I retrained. Thanks to Illinois State and my incompetent "advisor"(the head of the department) I wasted seven years of my life. I wasn't stupid and I wasn't lazy- I WAS LIED TO. I wish that it was possible to sue for misrepresentation and academic malpractice.
