Major: Chemistry (This Major's Salary over time)
What makes UGA great? For ME, I am happy that there are so many research opportunities for undergrads. I will have two semesters and a summer under my belt before grad. school, but there is potential for science majors to have four years experience by the time they leave! The biochemical, biology, chemistry, and genetics areas are top-notch, and known all over the U.S. Teachers are always willing to help, and many of them don't have listed office hours—you can basically go by any time for help. Some even have scheduled study groups once a week. Concerning the sciences (physics, chemistry, and biology at least), teachers make sure that you understand topics CONCEPTUALLY as well as mathematically. This is VERY important for anyone who wants to advance the world of science one day. If you are a serious science major and want to be competitive, get ready to work hard and study many hours (unless you are just a genius). No one likes to get a B. And getting an A in subjects like organic chemistry is very tough, but also very possible. Not to worry, though…if you ever feel burdened by studies, there are plenty of clubs, fraternities/sororities, sports, bars, and parties to take your mind off books. One last thing that makes this place great…your grade at UGA often reflects how much time and work you put into your studies. I have many friends "smarter" than I, but I have a higher GPA. Whereas other schools may tell you "sorry, you just aren't smart enough to succeed no matter how hard you work," UGA says, "your hard work will pay off."
