If you are uncertain *AT ALL* about whether or not you want to be an artist, Pratt is not the school for you. This school is all about the fine arts, with extremely little attention paid to the commercial aspect of art. Your concentration should JUST be in art, if you want Pratt to work for you, as the liberal arts courses here are a joke. Very few students are involved in the liberal arts, passing it off as just a graduation requirement, instead as something that could be beneficial to their education. Many of the students' reading and writing skills are sub-par, which I find to be disheartening. There are students here who have no idea how to write an essay, even though all students are required to write an essay prior to being admitted to the school. The downside of the lackluster interest in liberal arts, is that there is absolutely no balance to the school. You are attempting to be an individual with your artist statement, along with 4,999 other individuals. There are few, if any, liberal arts majors to balance the equation out.

I'm a photography major here at Pratt, and I am dissatisfied with the education that I'm receiving. The equipment here is horrible, with poor ventilation in the darkrooms that leaves a metallic taste in the back of my throat whenever I am working on an assignment. I am given entirely too much attitude when I would like to check out equipment, or if I have a complaint about the school.

Having worked in admissions, I can testify to the fact that this school is totally and completely unorganized. When the deadline for portfolios and applications are reached, the admissions office is completely cluttered with all the work. Boxes and bins spill out from the offices into the hallways, with slides falling out of binders, and papers being misfiled by student workers who don't understand the importance of the job they are doing. As a student worker in admissions, I was given copious amounts of work, work that temp workers were getting paid upwards of 12\( an hour to do the work I was doing for a meager 5\)/hr. The biggest complaint in admissions is that papers are always being lost. There are students who send in checks, even, who have to send in another check, based on the fact that Pratt lost their bundle of information in one of the several filing cabinets.

The disorganization would not be so terrible if there were any faculty members or office workers here who actually gave a damn about making this school a better place. Everyone seems in a rush to go home, and to not put the extra effort in to making this school a better place. President Shutte meets once a while with the students to essentially have a rant session, but he really does not take the comments to heart. It's basically just an opportunity for the students to get their complaints off their chests, so they can go back to making their art.

I am transferring out of Pratt, because after 3 years (and giving this school AMPLE chance to ratify the situation) I feel I am not getting a satisfactory education. For the cost of attending this school, you could have 4-5 very nice foreign cars, only to get an "education" that is substandard. The NYC art scene is great, but Pratt was just not worth it to me. Take your money elsewhere.
