I have to disagree with some of these reviews, I mean..yeah..Utah isn't the most ideal place to live or go to school especially if you lean more to the left than right and you have lived other places besides Utah, but I just finished my first year at the U as a transfer student in the Actor Training Program and I had a wonderful time. My perception of the school is very different because of my major, I'm surronded by extremly friendly, talented, and open minded people everyday. I came from another school in NYC to attend the Actor Training program because of its reputation and they only accept around 20 people a year. It is really a fantastic program and I am challenged every single day. I think it is probably the best place to get actor training in the west. The professors come from all other the world, mostly from the UK and they give everything to you and are always there for you. I am so happy I am in this program and I am at this University, though I have to admit that the program gave me a community of friends and peers who all have common interests. Salt Lake isn't the most ideal place to live, but their really is lots to do, you just have to get up and find it. I know of a party to go to almost every weekend and if I'm not in rehearsal I try and get to a concert or a play or somthing. Salt Lake is a city and their are things to do, I was actually suprised moving here to find the diversity in people and things. I am not a member of LDS church but I do have friends that are, and the mormon influence is really nothing to be worried about, its just a religion…if you don't agree with it you aren't going to be looked down upon. The LDS church has absolutely no influence on the Actor Training program and it runs like a professional conservatory and it demands a lot, more than I was willing to give at first. Plus, you won't be leaving the Performing Arts Building till late at night most of the time anyway, so you won't have time for much of a life outside the Theatre Dept. And all those other students at the U who are looking for a social life…make friends with people in the Actor Training program..we'll take you out to our parties.
