Guilford is incredibly "crunchy"; the faculty and students are interested and active in social justice. Quaker values (peace, equality, egalitarianism) are evident in every aspect of my program; but I have yet to have a class that discusses Christianity in more than a conceptual sense.Classes rarely provide concrete answers to questions and more often encourage students to creativly attack concrete and abstract issues. In general professors like to be challenged and I have yet to experience one of those classes where the goal is to stroke an ego and regurguitate an opinion. There is a strong focus on experiential learning. As a final note- the core curricula and evaluate methods at Guilford are unlike anything I have ever seen- cores include classes in "Diversity in the US", "Intercultural Experience", "Scoial Justice and Environmental Responsibility", etc. Classes are evaluated according to the degree to which they have contributed to a students understanding of diversity, cultural competence, community service and translation to the wider community. I chose Guilford for a semester while waiting to transfer to an ivy league school- in the end I stayed because I had fallen in love with the educational philosophy and academic freedom I found there. I don't regret my choice for a moment. Guilford has taught me the foolishness of evaluating status above substance.
