Some issues to consider:

  • The educational enviroment here is totally stagnant. Most of the local hawaiian students don't care about an education, many aren't very bright, and they just sit in class like bumps on a log. I think that being smart and wanting to be challenged in school is just not done here. This school is dominated by an opressive conservative asian atmosphere. The students fail to tap into their creative and intellectual potential because they are afraid of 'making waves', or because they are too high to care.
  • If you are coming from the mainland expect to feel like an outsider. All the locals at the school know each other from highschool, and they hang out in big cliques.
  • If you are white, you do not matter at UH. UH is not for you. You are tolerated, but expect discrimination from some profesors, especially the Hawaiian Studies department.
  • UH has no money. The campus is literally falling apart.
  • Anyone can get into this school with a 2.5. I recently heard that they were considering raising the admissions standard here to 3.0, which I think would be a good thing. But many of the local students protested, saying that then many Hawaiian students wouldn't be able to get into the school. I think that's pretty pathetic. UH is a large research university with dismally low admissions standards. Raising standards would attract better students and improve the atmosphere at the University. But most of the students don't care about educational standards or reputation. Many of them are just waisting time, going to school because they are tired of working, or because there parents pressure them.
  • Why go to UH? I am leaving after this semester. If you are coming from the mainland- don't. The education is not worth it. Hawaii is a beautiful place, but trust me, being a broke student who pays 10,000 a year for a subpar school sort of takes the pleasure out of living here. If you are a local, consider leaving the islands and broadening your horizons, even just for a couple of years.
  • This is an expensive place to live. You wouldn't believe it.
  • I love Hawaii, it is a place like no other. UH's main advantage is its location. I have lived in Hawaii for 3 years, all over the island. The warm, friendly aloha spirit is really wonderful. My main experience at UH has been frustration, because it could be a good school if the people here gave a sh#t.
