Like all schools Hofstra has its share of problems but I feel that the reviews here have really focused on the negative. Most of these reveiews have probably been written by people who have never encountered anyone from Long Island before. If you read through some of the other reviews on this site, you'll quickly discover that students from LI are the scourge of American universities. While I'll admit that some of the students I met at Hofstra left me wondering how the hell they graudated high school, I found that these encounters occur at most other schools as well (I work in academia). Having said that…

I found the computer science department to be a great environment. The students were a tightly knit group and while Hofstra is full of cliques the CS department seemed to be the exception (geeks and guidos got along just fine :) My advisors where excellent and were always willing to make time for me. I found them to be well qualified and were all interested in keeping the department current and relevant (not common in a lot of CS departments). The science classes I took (Physics and Bio) were all challenging and well taught and the students in the these classes (especially bio) where all really bright and interested in their work. In fact, I took a Physics class during a summer semester that was full of students from "good" schools (Yale,Hopkins,etc…). They were shocked at just how difficult the class was and ended up needing to go to the study groups along with all us "lowly Hofstra students". While the students in the humanities classes tended to be of a lower caliber, I still had really great professors for most of them. I still look back fondly on the poli. sci. and philosophy classes I took. My only major complaint is the business classes which should be avoided at all costs but I find most people feel that business departments are dumbed down. After graduation, I got a great job in my field because of the contacts I made here and have recently gone on to start my own software company.

Hofstra has something to offer for everyone, you just have to look for it. Having been out in the real world for a while and having worked with grads of some elite universities, I find that they are rarely smarter than everyone else, they just think they are and that's what makes the difference. In Hofstra's case it's the students perceptions of themselves that needs to be changed not the school itself.
