as others have said before, unless you are in wharton or are jewish or asian, penn is a pretty terrible place. academically it is top-notch - i wont dispute that, but socially it is a hell hole. everything is based around the greek system, and therefore drinking and drugs as well. thats right DRUGS. HARD DRUGS. i was heavily into the arts in high school (studio art and music), and i feel that similar people are next to impossible to find and make friends with. people are incredibly cliquish, and i feel it is extremely hard to break out and make valuable friendships with new people (well actually that would assume that one is able to make valuable friendships in the first place…) If you love to party and drink, and do drugs, and hook up with ugly JAPs, penn is for you. i feel as though ive wasted two years of my life here, and i am in the process of trying to find a school to transfer to.

responseMost of the people I knew were not any of those things (wharton, jewish or asian) and loved Penn. I count myself in this category. I had an amazing experience in the College. Only 20% of students are in the greek system, so NO the social life is NOT based around it. I went to some frat parties here and there, but most of the parties I attended were not greek (and I was not a greek). Yes there is drinking but I knew no one who did drugs (though I realize there are people who do—I just don't think it's a bigger problem at Penn than anywhere else.) You had trouble meeting people in arts and music? Penn is one of the only schools with a visual studies program and a world-class architecture school! There are something like 70 performing arts groups, many of which do music. I was in several myself. You were not looking for them!
responseI read the original post and got nervous a few days before I came to Penn - don't believe it! I'm not a Jap or in the Greek system and I had never drank before college. It didn't matter. Some weekends I go to crazy Greek parties and some I go downtown or have a chill night in the dorm. I've found friends who enjoy doing all of these things. You can go out every night of the week or stay in and play video games and you'll find friends no matter what if you look, although I made great friends in the first few days of orientation who are still my friends now. This person didn't try hard enough to make friends!
