I love William and Mary. I'm only a freshman, but a lot of the problems I see people listing here seem to be self created. There are so many great individuals at this school. I came from a preppy, out of state town where I played field hockey and wasn't a nerd. Everyone warned me that at WM all anyone does is study and everyone is a socially inept dork. I'm so glad I didn't listen to them. There are so many cool people here. Don't worry about a social life it's there. If you are a partier, don't associate with people who don't party. There's your problem. Sure frats are your basic source for alcohol and that type of stuff, but there are so many other things to do on weekends as well. The students are friendly, interesting, individual, and openminded. The faculty is smart and helpful. If you want to constantly party go somewhere else. But college is about studying too. And people don't study that much. At least I don't and the people I know don't and we do better than most (maybe because we're out of state). The crazy studiers are in-staters, and they do study a lot, but it's not a big deal. In the end all that matters is the grade YOU get. How does them studying affect you if you do well? Anyway here's the point. If you're naturally smart you can come here and have a great time. If you're someone who gets good grades and understands things by studying them all the time, AND YOU LIKE THAT, come here too, but don't expect to be able to slack off and get A's. The course work isn't that extremely demanding. Just set your standards high and you will be happy with the workload. It's college, dammit! William and Mary is a great place for smart people who aren't snobby or competitive. It's for individuals who aren't into cliques or who need to be socially defined by the people they surround themselves with. People who have problems with William and Mary are the people WHO EXPECT IT TO BE LIKE HIGH SCHOOL. That's just immature. College is about growing up and doing new things and meeting new people. If your closeminded and that much of a conformist that the only way you can have fun is by starting to drink every weekday at 5pm, go somewhere else. But trust me, if you want a party, there's always one somewhere. People at WM are just mature enough to know that partying is cool on the weekends, but there are other fun things to do as well. And what did you expect? It's a good academic school. It's not a big party school. Those schools are for the type of kids who don't get in here. Sorry to be blunt, but it's true. COME HERE! It's a great school with a great name. The people are awesome and it's worth it. Why are you in college? To get a good education and to form relationships that you will keep for the rest of your life. William and Mary is the perfect place to develop as a person. Even if you're not interested, apply here. I did it out of the blue so that I would have applied to 7 schools, and even after the acceptance didn't think twice about it. Then I came for the admitted students day and loved it. Just get past the stereotypes and make your own judgment. 95% of the people who come here stay here.

commentI just wanted to say thanks SO much for telling me all this. I was really starting to freak out about the lack of social life I was hearing about (I just got in Early Decision). This made me feel so much better, I really appreciate it!
